This is the noise I'm getting..

ignore the straight cut drop gears rattling it’s the tick tick noise I’m unsure about.

Presuming that it's not a leak of some kind it does sound like it's only on one cylinder, have you tried the basic stuff like checking the rocker cover for witness marks, putting a feeler gauge in the lash gap, or pushing down on the rocker adjuster with a wooden dowel with the engine running?

PS try turning your tickover up a bit to stop those drop gears from chattering

Thanks I've done all the basics, I can't seem to identify exactly where the noise is coming from. When you say a leak of some kind what do you mean by that? Exhaust leak maybe?

Yup, but it does sound mechanical to me, does the sound ever go away or is it always the same, even after a few good boot fulls. I've said this before in a post but my Mrs Mini suffers from something similar to yours but it goes away once the oil has got warm, I think its a sticky/tight lifter.

I fitted brand new roller rockers and it seemed to half the noise. I did around 100 miles at the weekend and it seems to be back. It does seem to randomly disappear then reappear for no reason every now and again but I would say it it there pretty much all the time. I might try some exhaust paste on the manifold welds to try and eliminate that?

I once convinced myself, using a bit of plastic hose to my ear and poking it round the engine, that the fan was catching somewhere.

It turned out much later, that there was a damaged tooth on the cam sprocket.

What would you do? The engine runs perfectly, just this noise has appeared. I really don't want to start stripping things down but is this the only option? Or just leave it and put up with the noise..

Would you enjoy stripping and rebuilding an engine ?

Some pre-war cars had a "Torque-Tube", a tube that enveloped the propshaft, clamped to the diff, making a T with the back axle.  They were notorious for the clamp slipping and the pinion disengaging from the crown wheel, so owners had "One in", One on the bench" and "One hanging on the wall" ready to go in.

I'd keep motoring, on the look-out for a spare engine (or two, Lol) that have compatible drive shafts and gear linkage.

Plenty of spare engines lol just the thought of doing it AGAIN! It sounds like loud tappets, but ill just live with it for now. Tappet clearances have been checked again, all ok. I'm at a loss now it just be something inside the engine

Worn out/damaged camshaft?
Have you measured actual valve lift and compared with manufacturers specs?

Push rods all seated correctly? Have had clatter on them before.

Yes this was all done when engine was built less than 10k miles ago

They all appear to be, it sounds like it's from the left side of the cylinder head (facing the engine from front) but nothing obvious from visual inspection

So you are thinking clutch side?

I Have also seen an issue similar where the bolts used were incorrect, by being too long, even the slightest bit which then rubs on the likes of the flywheel.

Oh dear, I hope it's not a cracked rear main bearing cap.  I have had that make a clicking.

Are you sure it's not the idler gear bearing?
