Good afternoon, everyone,

Has anyone had experience removing the starter motor with an air-conditioning unit still installed? I know the condenser might be in the way, but I'm wondering if it's possible to remove the starter motor without disassembling everything. It is an inertia starter. Can i get it out with just removing the grill and possibly the distrubutor?

I don't have access to my Mini at the moment; I'm just trying to prepare myself for the task.

Thanks

You shouldn't  have to remove the distributor. No idea about the aircon, but the motor will drop down  after it's been withdrawn about 1/2 an inch & will need to come back 3 to 4 inches to get the bendix gear past the  flywheel. If you can manage that you'll just need to figure out how to lift it out.

Might also be worth asking on the link below if you are on FB.

Useful FB link for Classic Mini Air Conditioning:-

"For all classic Minis built between 1959-2000 with air conditioning installed, from the factory, aftermarket or factory AC installed later. Only about air conditioning and any related problems, removal, modifications, installation, overheating, etc.
ANY posts or photos not directly pertaining to Classic Mini air conditioning will be deleted. Pictures of Classic Minis will be okay. Mini compatible AC systems found in other cars will also be allowed."

A photograph or two and more details about the Mini, year etc would help.
I have no issues removing the starter motor on my ‘98 Rover Japan Mini, there’s no air-con components in the way.

If you have the earlier air con system the condenser rad is above the starter motor, the later factory fitted system for Japanese export Minis has the Condenser + fan in the LH inner wing out of the way.

A decent electric ratchet and wobble 3/8 extensions makes all the difference when removing a starter where access is tight.
