Hello

Can anyone help. I have read the post on here about the problem locating the mark3 horizontal ignition switch. I have looked everywhere. Is there an alternative. I dont really want to change the steering column housing. Is there any alternative that will fit the ADU 3341 someone suggested also doesnt seem available. Have searched ebay but not found anything.

Do you know what the extra wire is for on the top please?

It looks similar but mine only has 4 wires and it is pretty flat inside where the bit comes out for the steering lock.

My guess would be it's the horn push.

PRC8230 might be worth a punt, if it's just the switch part. You can pry them open if you're careful, it's usually the contacts that erode.

I'm sure I've cobbled together various combinations back in the day when we had breakers' yards full of BL finest to experiment in. Can't remember exactly what but the other Mini pattern & Metro were all on my botching radar.

If you get it sorted, you could consider chucking in a relay or two to help the new switch last longer. Though the old one's obviously not done too bad!

I don't know what that additional wire is for, but you can likely ignore it.

It may also come down to buying a lock like this one and fronting an old school locksmith with the new and old ones, between them using the necessary hardware to end up with what you need.

The exact original Switches for Minis do come up from time to time on ebay, but you might be waiting a day or a year for one to show up.

The switch bit at the bottom where the wires come out seems OK. It is the key end. The key turns on the ignition and starts the car but  then I have to manually turn it back to stop the starter. I thought I maybe able to get this part out of the bit that goes round the steering column and see what is going on but it doesnt seem to come apart, maybe someone on here knows different. Thanks for your help so far.

That's a function of the switch bit. There's a tiny screw, through the side, that holds the switch barrel in the lock. If you remove that, you can investigate further.

Thanks I have unscrewed the little screw and just have a black plastic cylinder which does not seem to come apart and the metal casing with a small bit protruding from the centre no real parts to see.

That's correct. Note the key now turns freely & if you turn the switch with a suitable flat screwdriver you still sense the key positions. The switch part was originally metal, so it's likely already been replaced with something, possibly Metro

Thank you. Does that mean if I replace the switch bit that will sort out the sort of spring return when I let go of the key after starting. Is there some for of spring in the plastic bit?

The switch you suggested looks good I would just have to change the connector as mine are spade ones.

Should do. Like I said, the key part should turn with very little resistance. The switch should step - off - accessory - ignition - starter, and spring back to ignition from starter.

The Metro plastic switch? I'm about 90% sure it'll fit the original lock, you could ask the seller to do some measuring.

The other (new) one is for the lock Spider suggested as a replacement - it might be made to fit too, but looks a bit more work.

The various terminals are available from https://www.autospar...ugs-connectors other places if you want to to an extra tidy job.

I could be wrong, but I think that extra wire is for a radio. Mine has as additional wire as well which I read was for a radio.

I have managed to aquire a mark3 ignition switch but it appears to be from a 1275 and has 4 wires coming from it but I only have 3 coming from the car to connect to the connecting box. Any idea what to do? I have looked at the wiring diagram and it appears there are a white and red wire and a brown wire both going to the starter solenoid, the white and red one going through something called an inhibitor switch before it reaches the solenoid. can I just ignore this one?

Thanks for your help. Still trying with this.

Brown will the the permanent supply TO the switch, which will originate from the battery terminal of the solenoid

White is the supply FROM the switch to the ignition and ignition dependents circuits.

White with a red stripe operates the solenoid to crank the engine.

White green stripe would be the supply to accessories, like the radio but could also include windscreen wipers.

I had a Mark 3 as my first mini and as far as I recall there were only 3 positions: OFF-IGN-STARTt

Maybe (MAYBE?) this switch is a 4 position version like later Mark 4 minis (but in Mark 3 shape) with OFF-ACC-IGN-START

 - and the OP has connected the switch incorrectly so the start position is connected to the IGN and ignition is connected to the ACC position hence why they have to turn the key back to stop the starter operating

Sorry missed the earlier post saying more or less the same thing
