So I’ve been suffering from what I thought was noisy worn tappets on my engine. It’s like a loud tapping sound. So I bit the bullet and replaced the rocker assembly with brand new roller rockers adjusted to 15thou as per swiftune cam recommendations.

I started the car and annoyingly the noise was still there. A loud tapping noise that increases with revs but when driving along the noise doesn’t seem to be there. But when I stop it reappears.

I adjusted my fan belt and it is tensioned slightly more than it was before. Here’s the weird part. Since then, the noise has decreased significantly. It is still there slightly on tick over but absolutely nothing when driving and a lot less ‘tapping’ than previous. I’m baffled as to how tightening the fan belt could stop this noise? Has anyone come across similar? Or any thoughts on why it would happen?

Remove fan belt. Does it also stop?

I tried without fan belt and noise was still there. Was only until I reattached fan belt and tensioned it seemed to reduce

I'd say your Front Pulley or Damper Bolt is loose and / or the crank timing chain sprocket is split.

I had a crank sprocket split in two. Easier than you'd think if there's debris to get between the chain & the sprocket.
