the MOT inspector has raised these areas of krusty metal front of rear wheel arches.

Is it easier to remove the rear subframe to have better access of this area?
And is it worth getting the correct panel or just going ahead and making my own?

I'm dreading what else is required when i remove the underseal...

how long is a piece of string

I would start by having a poke around and seeing how far the rot goes, you don't want to have to remove the subframe it you can avoid it obviously but before you make any choices you need to know how much needs replacing

the rot may also extend into the horizontal closing panels (the flat 'step' bit at the rear end of the side bins by the back seats) in which case that's going to be more or less impossible to weld up with the subframe in place and also then tidy up / prep / paint both sides

you're going to have to start chipping away at the underseal gradually working outwards in all directions until you find good metal, also poke around with a screwdriver on the inside and see what you find

on the face of it just from those pictures personally I wouldn't think whole panels is necessary, you can just fabricate replacement sections, or I would anyway

that's my 2cents anyway lets see what others think

As said above, remove the cardboard trims from inside the rear seat side bins and have a look inside at the area with a torch and have a poke around with a screwdriver to see how far the rust damage extends in those corners. Also check under the rear seat cushion area and report back with photos if possible...

Thanks both - i managed to clean up and added some repair sections to both sides.

BUT while poking around, the rear valence i saw was just shot on one side and half non existent the other side.

the MOT guy didn't fail it - is this classed as not structural?

I will obviously get this sorted as soon as.

Can't see the pictures but I understand the boxes at the ends are structural, within 30cm of the subframe mount.Steve..

thought rear valance would be structural as box section provides some strength to boot floor area at subframe mount. would replace anyway to stop further rotting of bumper lip and boot floor

Technically its within 300 mm of a mounting point its a fail and as mentioned already sort it now rather than bodging. The fact he has not failed it makes me wonder.

BUT as he has not then thats a bonus. However you may need to concern yourself thats there more rust lurking espeicaly if the closing panels are rot as well. The correct items form part of the reinforcement for the rear subframe mounts so you will need these as well as a rear valance.

To fit these correctly you will need to drop the subframe.

another thing to learn "how to remove the rear subframe..." getting to know my project very well now :) The box sections i can see through the rusty valence and look decent. But as you say there's probably more rust.

I asked the MOT inspector for a pre-inspection as I knew i would end up with a big list
