I remember the build-up and hype in the motoring press, about Ford entering Le Mans.

 

Even though Lotus had made the Cortina go, it veered from incredulity that the maker of the Ford Corsair could risk ridicule by going racing, to, Wow, with the full backing of mighty Ford, watch out.

 

I'd had  a disastrous start to the week end, towing a relations caravan to Dorset, with first a tire going on the Friday evening and then a wheel bearing the next morning, and limping the last 10 miles, so I missed the start on my Transistor, and just as I turned it on, the first Ford dropped out.

 

You couldn't hear the radio driving in the Landrover, so I decided not to head home but sort of curl up on the bench seat and listen to the commentary.  It was uncomfortable and I'd keep waking up, and as the guy said, the Fords were like the "Ten Green Bottles".

 

By breakfast, although I'd met Masten Gregory testing at Goodwood and Rindt was my F1 hero, I'd lost interest and drove home, only to read in Autosport, the excitement I'd missed.
