Hi,

My wife's '91 998 carb Mini didn't fancy going for its MOT this morning and wouldn't start.  Was fine when I last drove it in March.  Float bowl is empty so I'm suspecting float valve (though this looks new and clean), fuel pump or maybe a split rubber hose somewhere preventing the pump from pulling fuel through (though there are no leaks on the floor).  I'll rule out the float and check the various hoses when I have time to tinker, but assuming it's the fuel pump this looks to be a right pain to access for replacement!  :(  Is it possible to replace the fuel pump with the engine in the car?

Alternatively, is there any reason why I couldn't just remove the hoses from the pump inlet and outlets and, fit a low pressure electric pump on the bulkhead instead?  I know earlier cars had a pump under the rear subframe, but the engine bay looks a lot easier!

Thanks,
Tim

First off to get the car going you could manually fill the float bowl and crank, you may find the mech pump will pull the fuel up with time and keep running.
If the pump is U/S it can be replaced with the engine in, or you could fit an elec pump at the front but you will need 9ne that can actually suck the fuel up, most do not.
I have used a cheap ebay item before,a hepa 2 pump but cannot find it now, you may, and these will suck up fuel ok.

Yes possible with the engine in but access is difficult. A ratchet ring-spanner is a game changer here. If the diaphragm in the pump has gone it will be dripping fuel and making a smell. If not then it probably works (although I could easily be wrong).

Check the engine oil for fuel... Smell should give it away

Had a spare 5 minutes to whip off the fuel hose from the float - lo and behold, plenty of fuel when cranked!  Removed float valve, blew it and the float lid through with an air line and we seem to be sorted.  Thanks for the replies anyway!

Cheers,

Tim
