I'm sure this has cropped up numerous times. Having just wrecked the 3rd length of the

wheel arch and bottom edge plastichrome trim, is there an acceptable and viable alternative?

Vehicle is a YKG2S2 ausmini cooper S. Inherited with the unfinished car were two lengths of flexible push on trim painted grey.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

I used a generic chrome strip "Chrome Edge Trim Styling Strip - internal sticky bead - fits 1-3.5mm" from ebay seller themetalhouse2012. At the time it was £3.50 per metre which made it a lot cheaper than the genuine item (especially as I was doing a woody, so the genuine was far longer than I needed). I found that it stuck on very well, even on quite thick and blobby-welded seams, and I had minimal trouble getting it around tight corners. A 3mm cable-tie at the front (via a small hole in the panel) retains the end. I'm happy with the result although obviously it's nothing like the correct profile. I also used it across the top of the parcel shelf and it made a neat job there. It's now up to £4.65 per metre so maybe won't complete so well with the genuine, especially on a saloon which needs more of it than mine did.

fit it so the curve is opposite to the car seems wrong but this and a pop rivet at each end worked on my clubby

Thanks for the replies . The problem I'm having is straightening the damned stuff without it kinking.

It's a bit tricky getting a straightened piece in the post!!!

Get a length of 1/2“ PVC pipe 10’ long and slide the chrome trim inside.
Let it sit for a few days ideally out in the warm sun which may help it relax.
Then slide the chrome out as you place on the car.

Lots more useful tips are in the link I posted above on the Mk1 Forum.
