I'm in the final stage of putting my engine back together and have changed to a Verto type clutch, and I'm not familliar with it's assembly.

Is the top hat (thrust sleeve) which goes on the end of the clutch nose between the plate fingers and bearing supposed to be a tight or loose fit.

Logic says it should be loose but mine is very tight. Just wondering before I machine it out.

Thanks.

As a little bump, as I'm still hopeing someone might be able to answer the question regarding sleeve fit, please.

But also in addition, I found an issue while setting up the plunger movement, or lack of movement.

Going by the book I need to set the throwout stop nut gap at 6.5mm, but I could only get 4mm before the plunger and arm mechanisum bottomed out.

The plunger I was using was brand new, but not genuine, since genuine were unavailable at the time. But I did have a genuine one stuck in a very corroded state which took me an hour of cursing to remove so I could compare it.

What I found was that the non-genuine (at 3rd of the price) gives half the movement. Whether all 23.5mm movement is required or useable I don't know, but it's such a difference and worth noting if you have clutch issues.

Many of the after market parts are poorly manufactured and what's worse is the so called reputable mini spares people actually sell them :shy:

Unfortunately all too true. And this is no exception.

Regarding my initial question, surely someone out there has assembled the top hat sleeve and can advise if it's a tight, sliding or loose fit.

Mini Spares states there used to be a plastic anti-rattle sleeve which is no longer available, this suggests to me it is a loose fit. I guess it's just held in place by the thrust bearing holding it against the clutch plate.

When I assembled mine the top hat was a slide fit, and easily pushed on.

It should slide over the end of the clutch centre without excessive play.  It shouldn't be a drive on fit as it transfers load from the thrust bearing to the clutch forks and so must slide on the fixed part of the clutch centre.  The early top hats with a plastic sleeve were larger and would be too loose for the job without the sleeve.

Thank you both for the reply and confirming the fit. Very much appreciated.

For completeness here's the Verto Clutch Race Plunger set from MS which is probably the MED version.
