I don't understand how a longer stud could hit the caliper am I missing something obvious

Like this one? But i read that the dome shape head will hit the calliper

That does look the correct nut, but clearly you'll need longer studs  ^_^

I run those and have never had a problem with them catching.

Just make sure they are fully seated - this will take more torque to pull them in than you would normally tighten a wheel nut to.  Unfortunately you can't knock them in, they can be pressed in but its not straight forward.

If they do catch it would be so slight that filing them down enough to get clearance wouldn't affect their strength sufficiently to be a concern.

Ideally you would have 2 to 3 threads on the studs coming out of the nut to ensure you have full thread engagement of the nut...especially for safety reasons in the case of securing your wheels which are quiet important part of a car!

I have the same wheels, had the same issue and used these

https://www.msar.co....heel-studs.html

50mm for the fronts - 7.5" disk setup
60mm** for the rears - spacered rear drums

EDIT : ** the 60mm studs are flush with the tops of the wheel nuts when tightened up. if you (..or the vehicle examiner..) want to see a few threads exposed, then the 65mm studs would be better

2nd EDIT ! : corrected which studs are flush with the nuts

..and these nuts

https://www.minispar...uts-full-set-16

worth noting that as these studs have domed heads they *may* need 1mm or so taking off to clear the brake caliper ( possibly dependent on the calipers being used)

I see, thanks, did not think clearance was so minimal

are some of them flat heads then, does this only apply to certain size discs .. only asking because I've replaced my studs and now I'm wondering.

can do something about it easily now as it's all still awaiting assembly

Only on the S type. The correct studs for the S type of fitting also have flat heads.

no such issues on the brakes that use the 8.4” fitting.

Is the 60mm measured below the head, so the total length will be 65mm?

for the longer studs - the dome one can be flattened off with grinding wheel BEFORE you put them in the assembly - and keep a few steel nuts around for pulling the studs into the flange  ( can ruin thread of alloy nuts)

The closed wheel nut type I do not like - unless I do the measures myself because of bottoming out before tight. ( I actually have sacrificed a bolt or two - drilled out the enclosed end - so I can see where the threads finish etc

Also as for wheel nut engagement - I thought rule of thumb was like for like eg 5/16 diametre thread 5/16th engagement (or whatever number of threads that is .

Travel safely .. and those wheels look great.

Stud length is quoted as being from the head face to the end of the thread

http://www.grayston.biz/studspage.htm

Also worth noting that in my previous post I mistakenly said the front studs (50mm) were flush with the wheel nuts when fully tightened - in fact it's the rears that are flush. The fronts have a good 6-8mm exposed

Unfortunately not all places quoted the length as above. I just bought some 60mm and they are the total length.

Those nuts definitely don't look correct to me...
