My 1989 city e has started knockin from engine when moving off and stopping - assume its engine movement, have replaced bushings on top mount, and it had new engine mounts about 2 years ago. Haynes manula helpfully say '' later models '' have a lower mount too.... assume later includes 1989 ?

If so , does anyone know exactly where to find it , and does it take the same bushings as upper mount ?

thanks

The bottom one does very little. If it is rocking then most likely the top one.

lift the bonnet and grab the rocker cover and see where it moves.

Also check engine and subframe mountings.

thanks- have replaced top mount last year with poly bushes -

would the subframe mounts be noisy over bumps ?

And have you looked at the poly bushes? They are crap and don’t like heat and turn to dust. They can also cause the bottom part of the bulkhead bracket to fail.

again lift the bonnet t and grab the rocker cover.

Our ‘86 City E had had the top arm bushes replaced with poly bushes before we bought it, they’re crap and as per Nick’s comment the bottom bulkhead bracket had failed. Use the late model one piece sleeved bush.

Also consider the ultimate engine steady thing that goes onnthe water pump to bulkhead.

found it rubber looks knackered- so will change - but engine semeed pretty stable when I tried moving it - who;le car seemed to move .

Ho do I check subframe mounts - the front (rear ) looked ok  to me - but should I inspect upper tower mounts - and if so how ?

I would be surprised if this alone is the issue as a lot of cars only had the top steady originally and were fine.

I would suggest checking the front subframe mounts, particuarly the ones between the front subframe and toe board, best way to do this would probably be to jack up the car on the subframe then support the body on axle stands and gently lower the subframe and see if the mounts are still in one piece.  Its unlikely the tower mounts would be the problem unless they have fallen out but i've never seen that happen.

thanks- so you mean let the jack down slowly after supporting body on axel stands ?

Yes exactly that, carefully lower the subframe on the jack with some stands placed under the body (maybe use a piece of timber to spread the load) and as the weight of the body goes onto the stands the weight of the engine may cause the subframe to keep going and show the mounts have failed.  Be careful doing this as you don't really want all the weight of the body, engine and subframe on the body as you might dent the floor.

If it was moving enough for that to be making noise you have greater issues elsewhere. The lower ones do bugger all to stop any rocking.

ok knocking is still there, noticed when greasing my nipples (well cars obviously ) that there is no bolt on  the bracket securing the manifold pipe. Amyone know what sort of size it should be... would any short  10mm bolt do the trick...?.. want to secure this before any further investigations
