for what it's worth, i have to agree with Keith's observation that the camshaft itself is demonstrably of such poor quality (i.e. unfinished journals) that in this particular case it's far more likely (..because without laboratory analysis it is all just speculation and probabilities...) that the damage has resulted from the camshaft that's been used rather than an issue with the followers.

hi sorry to hi jack this post, but is there anyway to check the followers will rotate correctly before the engine is fully built. I have my engine partially built ( head not fitted) and I just installed new followers without realising any checks were required.

Yes, they should turn when the engine is turned over by hand. Not much, maybe only 1/4 turn per couple of revolutions of the crank.

I understood that the curve of the followers in conjunction with taper on the cam lobes caused the rotation.Might be a case for inspecting the camshaft as well.Steve..
