Hi,

I'd like to get a bit more bite from my brake pedal, and am thinking that some upgraded brake pads might be a good first step.  (I am also going to get the brake fluid changed though, as its showing between 2 and 3% with my tester).

What is a good current recommendation?  I don't race the car or anything like that, But I do sometimes drive it enthusiastically.  I'd just like them to feel a bit more reassuring.  Car is standard currently.

Ta!

Your lack of bite maybe the discs and pads have smoothed out. I once drove a mates mini with 8.4 discs and the brakes were atrocious, not a patch on my 7.5s. A quick linish with a coarse sanding disc improved them out of sight.
Mintex and ferodo are on a par, I am currently using ebc DP102 Kevlar for road use and they are as good as the mintex.
What you dont want are pads that need to heat before they work such as racing or fast road.

Thanks!  Had a look on Minispares and found them, although they say they're not to be used on the road...?     https://www.minispar...es/C-AHT16.aspx

I'm sure this is true about the smoothed out thing.  Thanks for the tips.

Try different pads by all means, you might find what you are after here, however, in particular, with the 8.4's, while I tried every type of pad I could find, the only way I could get the brakes I was after was to go to 4 pot calipers. It was like night and day.

I would suggest checking the calipers seals. Make sure they are all free and move at the right equal time as each other...

This also includes checking the ba k brakes are adjusted properly for the system to be tip top.

I would also ask how old the rubber brake hoses are as they occasionally perish inside and appear o.k. on the outside but seriously weakened on the inside..

I've tried the Mini Spares ones and KADs. The Mini Spares items I found definitely the better ones to use, the KADs flex a fair bit. If you swap, just be aware too, there's different caliper bolts to fit too.

As Midas says, Mintex 1144 are great for brisk road use on the 8.4" discs. For serious competition use they do fade a bit too soon for me, but for a road car they are ideal.

For more serious use, the Mintex 1166 are great, whilst for the 7.5" 'S' discs, the Carbon-Metallic pads can't be bettered, although you do need a competition brake fluid with those.

Hi ,   I am in the double check the system is working at its optimal first, before swapping out pads. ( so great idea to renew brake fluid and get someone to pump the brakes hard while you look at the rubber hoses)

The other thing about feel and bite is checking you are actually measuring the braking impact not just the movement at the pedal.- but if you do stopping distance tests (especially repeated ones) the actual braking impact will be known.  I do love the carb metallic pads in the 7.5s but not offered in 8.4 to my knowledge.

I couldn't find C-M pads for 8.4" discs and used M1166 in my rally car before I changed to 10" wheels and 7.5" discs.

Ferodo also do some good pads for competition use and Ferodo 2500 are, apparently, very good. I don't know whether they are available for 8.4" Mini brakes, but it might be worth checking.

pads has been covered, but it may be worth swapping discs, if somones put a cheap set of sics on there, the cheap ones are quite hard...  i discovered the difference in material when i was turning down some discs... the more expenisve (only a couple of quid more...) one turned down much easier than the cheaper version... they are softer, and will wear quicker, but they work better....

also avoid greenstuff pads IMO... never had a set i liked in a mini.... Id recomend the Mintex 1144's too
