Please don't take this the wrong way, but you have fitted the camshaft followers? It's just plain wierd, what sort of gap are you getting with the tappet screws in as far as they will go with the lock nuts on.

OK, so the engine has been stripped back down to check everything.

Yes, cam followers are fitted.

valves are the correct longer length

cam shaft is about 1 mm narrow in the core, which will only be 0.5mm lower.

Cam followers are slightly thinner in the base by about 0.75mm

decompression plate and extra gasket is about 3 mm

The head has had all new valve seats fitted with new valves. They all appear to be seating nicely

We have fitted longer adjuster screws (2mm longer) which will only gap correctly if hanging on to the locking nuts by a couple of threads. But not on all valves! Some gap better. The heads of the valve stems are not all exactly at the same height, but that is what the adjusters are for.

So a mystery!

We have ordered a spare rocker assembly and are going to get the posts machined down by 2mm to see what effect that has on the gapping.

In years gone bye, when faced with this sort of problem, I'd take, in this case a pushrod, and go round the various agencies parts stores, Standard, Roots, Vauxhall or foreign makes, and ask for one and compare it.

Triumph Herald rockers, for instance, had a better ratio than BMC A series.

Someone like Rimmer bros, who do replacement parts, might be able to tell you of a longer pushrod.
