Unable To Start Mpi After 6 Years Restoring

Best Answer nickcx500 , 05 March 2024 - 06:13 PM

All Done! The red/white wire from the EMS to the Alarm ECU was broken between the EMS plug and the multiplug behind the engine. Just need to find out why the fuel isn't coming through.

Hi

I have spent the last 6 years restoring my MPI, 1998 and 1 previous owner.

This is the issue I have;

Switch on and fuel pump runs...main relay operates...stepper motor doesn't operate...starter relay doesn't click in but you can make it work by pressing the relay by hand and then car tries to start.

I have replaced the wire red/white from the EMS to C8 on the fuse box and the brown wire EMS to C7 fuse as they were open circuit.

The starter relay tests about the same resistance as the other 3 but there is no live getting to it. There is live to the plug as it comes from fuse C8. I can't see any break in the printed circuit board but I don't have a diagram for it.

Can someone help please?

thanks Nick

I have had a similar sounding problem. Replaced the ignition switch. Problem solved.

Might be worth checking the output from yours.

If you haven't already done so you may want to check that the immobiliser is being deactivated. As well as the +ve being switched from the ignition switch (crank), the starter relay is also switched on the -ve  by the ECU. From Rover's Mini Electrical Library (RCL 0424ENG):

Engine Immobilisation
The engine is immobilised when the perimetric alarm is set, inhibiting the engine primary
electrical circuits. Immobilisation is removed when the LH handset button is pressed. The
alarm ECU provides an earth on the W/R wire (via the automatic inhibitor switch on the W/
LG wire in the case of vehicles fitted with automatic gearbox) to one side of the starter relay
coil. Since the other side of the coil is receiving battery voltage from fuse C8 the passenger
compartment fuse box on the W/R-W/K wire, the relay is energised. Once this occurs,
battery voltage is switched from link 4 in the engine compartment fuse box on the N wire via
the MEMS relay module to the starter motor on the N/R wire, with an immobilisation signal
being sent to the MEMS ECM on the W/S wire.

If the car has been resprayed I would double check the earth beside the expansion bottle. If it is not 100% it throws up lots of problems with the mems system.

If I connect an earth wire to one side of the starter relay and turn the key the relays operates. How can I check that the earth, which I believe is supplied by the ECU?
