If the rad needed topping up it means the expansion bottle is empty or more likely the rad cap is not sealing right. '91-'96 minis have an expansion bottle under the wing and the rads are fitted with a special rad cap with two seals. If the upper seal is worn it will draw in air instead of water from the expansion bottle.

I did buy a new radiator cap (GRC207 15 psi), however I'll double check this when I'm over at my workshop this week if its the correct one. I'm not up with the play with the expansion bottle set up and how this works - there is one under the front wing as I had a quick look yesterday and it looks empty to me, so I assume it should be at least half full with coolant?
