I need an original horn for my BMW R90s but they're like (very expensive) hens teeth. It should look like the first pic with a chromed plate on the front of it, I've bought the one in the second pic which has a black painted plate. The only way in appears to be un-crimping the outer edge but I'm not sure what tool would be best for this? Then, once I've chromed the plate I suppose I'll have to re-crimp the edge (any suggestions for achieving a smooth crimp? then re-paint the outside.

I've had my bike since 1980, and although it was a while ago I replaced the horn when it stopped working, I'm 99% sure the plate was chromed.

Yes, as in the picture at the start of my post, all steel, I believe the sound is produced by vibration of the plate and aluminium being softer would affect the sound? Anyway, my question was how to cause minimum damage whilst disassembling  and re-assembling the horn.

Really depends how you intend to make the centre chrome. Spray paint or a full treatment.

Think I would just put up with it being black until I find a proper one.. (if it really matters)

that's the problem - they're unobtainable - I want the centre plate chromed as the original. I have bought a similar horn to practice on so i'll see what can be done.
