The indicator stalk has a loose cable as shown in the pic for the horn switch. Should this be attached to the white part with metal connector? 

The horn is working touching both earth and the wire coming through.

 

Can this be repaired or is this a straight swap for a new stalk?

 

I presume the order is

Outer housing > white connector > spring > top housing

Not sure, but the metal tube of the stalk is a conductor. The supply to the horn (purple/black) should be connected at the base. Pressing the horn connects the wire up the centre to the tube

Hi,

i had a problem with the wire through the centre in that it was frayed where it cam out from the bottom of the stalk causing a short.

I managed to wrap some insulating tape around it to solve the issue. 

Can you tell me how you removed the the plastic part from the stalk. I could not get it off. Is it just a push fit?

I would like to replace the wire completely.

The plastic part as you say looks like a push fit but it had been 'played with' by the previous owner so was loose anyway. The white part grabs onto the metal sleeve.

 

I'm not sure if it's suppose to come off i.e being a sealed unit

The end is glued/solvent welded on. You can saw them off with a scalpel, but it could end in tears.

 

Should the wire be connected to the copper stud in the cap so it will make contact with the copper in the big end of the white piece? the copper at the other end would just need to stay in contact with the stalk.

 

If the white part grips the stalk the spring must go between it & the cap in a manner that it can't touch the cap contact. 

 

Should the inner wire be able to slide inside the stalk? It look like the stalks been bent a bit. The increased drag could explain why the wire detached.

On the early versions the wire is soldered into the contact. Not sure about that version.
