Hi,

Appreciate some advice on the following please. On a newly acquired 1972 1275 GT.

Broke down yesterday and suspected fuel issue. Had inlet hose to carb off, cranking engine and no fuel coming out at all. It has what looks like quite an old mechanical fuel pump on the engine.

Today I've taken the pump off, and as I did the pin holding the arm into the pump housing fell out. Also the plastic spacer between pump and engine were cracked.

Has anyone had this happen before?

Am I right in thinking this pin should be retained? And the arm would not work like this when bolted to the engine?

I have a new pump, spacer and gaskets on the way.Attached File  Screenshot_20240205_105744_Gallery.jpg   89.49K   7 downloads

The pin should be retaining in the pump along with the arm that pivots on it. The edges of the pump housing peened over to prevent it from falling out into the engine.

Lucky you got all the bits out!

Thanks I see what you mean, surprising really as it's a tiny bit of peening that's visible.

Highly recommend the genuine su burlen mechanical pumps compared to the cheap ones on ebay, been there, swapped that a few a few weeks

The witness mark on the upper of the two gaskets suggests the pin had come loose and moved towards the engine and was only retained by the gasket, hence perhaps the failure to  pump.  The plastic spacer has been opened out so far by a previous owner that it would no longer support the pin at each end.

Maybe they thought it should match the outline of the hole in the block?
