I'd say the heavy one is a Tow Point and the lighter one a Tie Point.

As Spider says, weren't they fitted as a lashing point required to secure the car when being recovered on a trailer/dolly?
For towing the bent rod type could be more forgiving, better to bend it than the subframe. Assuming it doesn't part company altogether!
...whenever I recovered any of my Minis they were stuck head first in something. I'd have had more use for one on the rear

I purchsed some heavy duty lifting eyes which are much stronger and fit better than any towing eye.

From experience, no matter what tow hook you have, have a carabiner and small loop, as most recovery winches can’t fit on the mpi / smithy’s hook without a jumper loop
Do you mean an anchor shackle (or bow shackle?).
This is always a good idea. - I carry a soft shackle (as used in 4x4 recovery) for this purpose. They weigh nothing and are much more pleasant to have rolling around in the rear than the metal version.

There are early type towing eyes that had a large washer attached, these will fit solid mounted subframes but are two large to enter the teardrop mounts. The towing eyes are also used for mounting the nudge bars often seen on French minis.
