Hello

I need some light ! Could somebody show me a m/w gearbox lever in its place and/or a picture of the lever seat in good condition?

I must restore it somehow because I don't find replacement.

1st picture:  there is a small "detent" on the lever's seat. Its width is about the half of the groove. It worn out it is allright ? Maybe this one limts the side movement of the lever ?

2nd picture : the pin which drives the gear lever is position fallen out from the seat. How was it fixed into the seat ?

I assume you have the later type of magic wand gearlever assembly which came in with the 4-syncro gearbox/Mk2 Mini 850 and was introduced to use the remote gear change style of diff housing?

The 4 synch magic wand gearlever is also different to the 3 sync magic wand gearlever, ie. has the keyway slot in the ball at the top not the side.

The earlier magic wand 3-syncro gearbox (Mk1 Mini 850) also had a different 'tower' type diff housing.

This thread below on the Mk1 Forum also has some useful information on the later magic wand setup.

(As said you need to register first to view the Technical part of the forum).

How well does the “thick end” of the pin fit the groove on the gearstick?

It appears to me that the pin should be the same diameter the whole length and the pin is very worn

For me it looks like that pin is produced to this shape. I believe that the tapered shape has its purpose but I don't have a clue  :D

Zero experience of 'em, but it looks like the pin might go the other way round to allow some lateral movement. Expect its purpose is just to stop the stick turning turtle under its own weight.

The Australian market spec likely has the pin on the other side.

A picture from the web shows that the pin rises just a little bit.

Anyway, I'll try put a threaded insert to the seat with a new pin.

I think I'm figured it out : maybe the tapered shape should hold a spring which holds the pint in the hol also ? Becuase the groove on the sphere is flat, and the pin must follow its shape.

The second photo in your first post - the alloy foot/seat looks to be quite worn too. My guess is the wear here, plus the pin means it’s just worn out. The gear stick would have been much stronger than the alloy

The photo of the new item doesn’t seem to have the same taper on the pin

The surface finish suggests it's as intended & the cone end is the business end by the wear marks. If you can visualize how the two faces of slot in ball would would move to describe a segments (in an orangey analogy), the cone on the pin could fit snugly between them.

Yes. Because the tapered end is IN the hole, positioned inwards. The taper itself holds a spring.

The non-tapered end  positioned outwards and it sits in the groove of the gear lever's sphere

Well there isn't any spring under the pin  :proud:

Today I repaired the piece with a threaded insert
