It will be time early next year to spend some gearbox money so I was wondering who was using what as regards dog gear kits?
Is Jack knight still going? Or is it mainly MED and swiftune kits that are being used now?

JKD went years ago.

 

went MED for mine.

Swiftune for mine, planning to fit over winter.
I wanted a speedo drive, so that ruled out MED. So came down to KAD or Swiftune.

Swiftune and an ATB. It's handled 218 ibft for the last couple of years with no issues. It gets used hard on track and it's well behaved on the road.

They advertise it as a "modular" laygear and indeed it looks to be in two parts.
What's the purpose of this?

Looking at the Swiftune pictures, a "Modular" as opposed to one piece Lay-gear, could permit a choice of ratios when building the gearbox.

 

Do you really need a Dog-box ?  In the heat of a race, it is easier to 'miss a gear' with a Dog-box than syncro, and to fall back a couple of places as competitors take advantage of the error, is flipping annoying.

As above I'd imagine. Swiftune offer their gear sets with a choice of 3 different ratios. I guess they can be rebuilt into a different set of ratios.

JKD used to do this. The old Metro had two different gear sets in it. A very high first and the rest were close. As the MG cup cars used a rolling start.

3 bearing configuration on the Swiftune layshaft. Don't know what MED or KAD use.
Bearing on the small end of the shaft is not the standard 3 step shaft bearing.

I think Spares are freely available due to the nature of the kits being competition orientated.
MED sell parts separately so I'm presuming the others do too.
The swiftune and KAD ones with the extra laygear bearing look good, I wonder if the extra bearing makes a difference?

KAD's layshaft actually uses 4 bearings.
2x large and 2x small A+ sized bearings.
Swiftune's uses 2x large A+ bearings and 1x 'non standard mini' bearing on the small end of the shaft.

Far more road friendly than I'd imagined it to be.

Out of interest, what oil do you use with a dog box, I presume some sort of motorcycle rated stuff?

I'm currently using Millers CTV 20/50, same as I used with the previous syncro gearset.
