Well I have some selector forks with pretty much wear on the sliding surfaces. As these are all scrap and the new ones are pricey I will take a chance on weld-up them with laser technology end re-surface in a machine shop. There is some company in my area with these services. I have nothing to lose.

Now my questions :

1) I guess they are casted from bronze. But is there any detailed info about its material ? I see a 'AB14' mark on it. Does it say anything about the material ?

2) 1st/2nd fork has only 4 small surfaces but there is an "un-used" area in the middle. Does it make sense to make it for a full surface as on the 3rd/4th fork ?

Thanks

Which gearbox were they out of?

This one is from a 22G1128 box, 850 with magic wand, 4-syncro

Maybe "brazing" is the correct name for this procedure

I've actually been saving all the worn selector forks I've been removing the past 5 or so years to do exactly this with them. I haven't had time to do them just yet so I can't say if it'll be worthwhile or not just yet.

Might have some good used ones here.

Kinda. Need to see if I do still have them. But they are not needed now and have done little.

Interesting. Don't know anything about lasers but I would try TIGging with silicon bronze. The rod I use is called "SIFSIL COPPER 968". It sticks to most things. But try it on a small area first. You will know at once if it's happy.

I guess laser makes less heat on the process. My mate repaired a Cooper crank with this technology.

My guess would be aluminium bronze. The boat industry might be a useful place to ask as it's used for propellers.

If it is aluminium bronze then my suggestion to TIG it with silicon bronze probably won't work. You would need to use an aluminium bronze rod and also a welder that can do AC.

I do have a factory machining drawing of one of them, but that doesn't state the material, that would be on the foundry drawing.

I think the originals were an Aluminum Bronze but the replacements that have been available for some years now are straight Bronze or Lead Bronze.

Any used ones will have absorbed some oil in to them, you'll need to clean that out to make any brazing of the successful.

If Stoneface is following this thread, he maybe able to shed some more light.

Do you think some heat will vanish the oil ?
