Anybody had a paint job recently?

Appears my Mayfair needs to go back to bare metal for repairs 😢 and was wondering what a full respay costs (rough ideas) are these days…

cheers

How long is a piece of string.

What bodywork needs doing, who's doing it??

The prep is one of the biggest expenses followed by what sort of paint, Solid, Metallic??

Whats YOUR budget??

Now having said all of that, if the car is being given to the painter in bare metal post repairs then at least they will entertain it and ulitmately it will work out somewhat cheaper. If you get quoted a really silly cheap price then expect the worst. If the price range is between £3k and £6k then that is what i would expect.

I’ve just had mine professionally repaired and painted, two different places. We moved house earlier in the year and with everything else that needs doing (including another Mini we’re fully rebuilding) I decided I was going to be beaten if I didn’t get outside help!

You might want to sit down ….

I’m fortunate to have a guy fairly local to us who’s a renowned Mini specialist so it went there to have all the rot sorted and new panels fitted … £3500

He then painted all the interior and stone chip protected the underside … another £1500

From there it went directly to another local painter who’s very much at the premium end of the market, for my little Mini it was effectively rehab with Ferraris including an F40! This involved a substantial amount of corrective filling even on the new panels, but the result is stunning … £5000

These figures don’t include any of the panels I needed, plus I fully stripped the car and I’m rebuilding it myself. It’s not a small spend and potentially “is it worth it?” comes into the equation, but it’s money better spent than a bad holiday and it’s only the overspend (over final value) that is actually relevant.

These figures sound about what I would expect for what you describe, bodywork takes a lot of time and skill to get right.

Sadly the old adage of "if you want to make a small fortune from classic cars start with a large fortune" is generally true.  One of the problems is it takes the same amount of effort to paint a later mini as a MK1 Cooper S and its only the panelwork time and cost that differs yet the values of the cars can be hugely different.

Its the same with a lot of other cars, I have a 3.8 MK2 Jag and a 2.4 MK2 Jag, both in good condition and yet the 3.8 is worth at least twice what the 2.4 is just because it has the bigger engine (and came from the factory as a 3.8 rather than a 2.4 with a 3.8 engine in it).   Restoring both cars was a similar amount of work although the 2.4 was worse just because of how it had been stored.

There of course is another option and that is have a go yourself.

This is what i did after getting quotes of in excess of £6k for my clubby.

Results were

TwNREAv.jpg

It cost me circa £150 to make a spray booth, £700 on paint products, £89 on a spray gun, i had a couple of compressors (i killed one) £150 on breathing air filters. I have already got a air fed mask.

So not cheap, however i sprayed inside, outside and underneath with all of this and i am not by any means a paint sprayer, in fact this was only my second full spray job. Mistakes were made, recitifed and job done. I did get some really good info from Ben_O on here which without i would have had some serious issues / paint selection etc.

Is it perfect, no but i have one door that i will address again at some point in the future but thats it.
