I have one of these, cheap and cheerful. The legs rotate and have double sided tape on so it's just taped to the window.

Ok. Is that the one that needs a shroud

It could benefit from a shroud, if you drive at night it does light up the whole back window but I guess it makes your breaking more visible lol

I made my own bracket, painted in crackle black and used a Lucas L488 to give it a period look.

I made my high level brake lights from scratch, and included indicators. I can't find my original forum posts on the build, but here are two videos:

On my Mk1, installed about 10 years ago, I used very basic LEDs. I wanted it as covert as poss, its hardly noticeable when they are not illuminated:

Then in 2019 when I got my 1990 Cooper, I decided to try LED rope lights and made a custom holder, a bit more obvious, but brighter, however video is in direct sunlight, so does not seem as bright as real life!

I'm surprised there aren't many decent high level brake light kits for minis, I've followed loads of minis on runs where it's hard to see the brake lights, especially when their lights are on and raining. I've fitted a few in mine, the same as linked below, another that was similar and now this one that I made myself using a lucas lens, 40 LED's and a 3D printed housing. I've never really noticed them lighting up the back window without a shroud.

A Hella 5239 is perfect but they would be difficult to get outside of Australia and New Zealand. Unfortunately I do suspect they have been discontinued like a lot of useful Hella products.

That looks great, would love any pointers as to how you did it.

We frequently go out with the kids in the back and I always drive with a big gap at the front, plus one eye on the rear view. A bright high level brake light is my next to do on the car.

Cheers

I am currently looking at this one. Available on eBay & SVC.

Think it would suit my rear end :-).

They look like W&P style arches available from most mini suppliers...

Mine arrived this week (see earlier post) so managed to mount it on a bit of board under the rear parcel shelf - there was just a bit of carpet there.  The actual item was not quite high enough so found an old speaker stand bracket and cut that in half which was perfect and also had a slot for the cable.

Just connected to the battery for the time being as too cold in the garage but you get the idea!  Nice and bright :-).

And just to finish my lighting/visibility upgrade - the rear fog lamp got fitted today.  It is a WIPAC clear indicator lens with an extra bright red P21W LED bulb to match the others.  The stainless centre bracket came from John at JB Fabrication.
