I was wondering if it's E for Export maybe.  certainly looks a bit like an afterthought or something someone scratched in later for some reason

I am sure E has some meaning regarding the engine specification but I don't know what.

Here is a plate from a Mini 1000's engine

Somewhat related....not totally...lol

Was there a 4 synchro "magic wand" shift.  If so, which cars...van/picup?

Also...can a 1275 be mounted to one of these gearboxes?

They did make a 4 synchro “direct change” which used a remote style diff cover, metal lower plate and a different gearstick. The parts are listed below:

You can also swap an early 3 synchro diff cover onto a 4 synchro remote gearbox case (with all the usual notes on line boring). I did this for my current gearbox and it lined up perfectly without any line boring

Mine is a 850 with 4-syncro box, but it is not a "real" magic wand but a modified remote.

How do you call it ?

Quote from Somerford Mini:-

"While the direct and remote change systems are very obviously totally different, they share the same gear selector mechanism inside the gearbox.  From  late 1968 when the gearbox went over from 3 to 4 synchromesh, they shared the same differential housing too - prior to that, the direct gearchange had  its own unique diff housing with a small gearchange tower on it."

https://www.somerfor...ote-gearchanges

Mk III (1969 – 1976)

The 4 synchro gearbox 22G1128 was introduced in 1968 with magic wand or remote.

However the magic wand version differed from earlier 3 synchro 'magic wand' gear lever gearboxes by using the remote casing, probably as a cost reduction exercise to use one common casing for both types.

Number: 22G1128

Type: 4 Synchro, Magic Wand

Laygear: 22G927

Final Drive: 3.76 Rubber Joint

Applications: Mini 850, Mini 1000 (also Mini Van and Pickup)

Remarks: Used for the very first 85H engines in 1970 where a standard 22G1128 remote casing was equipped with magic wand gear lever by using shaft 88G233 or 88G553 (non-remote
housing), button 2A3467, spring 2A3390 and plate/pad 22A1832. Also confirmed for very late 1969 Mini 1000. Confirmed on original car.

Note: The 4 synchro magic wand gearlever is also different to earlier 3 synchro gear levers, ie. it has the keyway slot in the ball at the top not side.

Also it should be noted the general 'feel' of this later magic wand remote 'conversion' is sometimes not quite as good as the earlier 'dedicated wand 3-synchro diff cover' used for the Mk1 Mini magic wand gear change, especially when any wear is present in the various component parts.
