I’m currently assembling a new rear subframe for my ‘98 Mini and on the old subframe there was a hard rubber block glued in place on top just above the front exhaust hanger, is this needed on the new one, and importantly what is it for?

Older minis used to have pieces of a material like sound deadening on top of the subframe and these used to absorb water and cause corrosion, these were on the sides on ones that i've seen though not the front.

I always assumed that they were used during assembly to space the subframe down so they could get the front bolts in.

I can't see any other reason for them.

We have an ‘86 with the sound proofing type pads that you mention, they likely became damp within a few days of leaving the factory and spent the subsequent years rotting the boot floor. This differs though being a much harder material.

Looks like they changed the material on later Minis.....maybe to stop boot floor panel vibration /noise transfer from the exhaust?

That’s possible, it’s just a thick/hard neoprene type sheet which I assume would apply some pressure to the floor.
