Hi. I recently completed the Decleration of Exemption from MOT form.

I took it to the post office who sent it off with the V5

I've now received a new V5 - but I can't see anywhere that it is MOT exempt.

have i missed something ?

regards

Geoff

When you "tax" it you fill in a form stating it is MOT exempt and hand over that and the V5 and reminder document/tax application at a post office.  I believe DVLA are intending to put the MOT exemption form on line so you can renew your zero tax on line.

as Coopertaz says, if says HISTORIC VEHICLE on the V5c, then its tax and MOT exempt.

there is no section for MOT exemption, this is probably because it gives them the option to change the law when they feel like it, especially if Labour get it!

So as long as it states HISTORIC VEHICLE on the V5c, that vehicle is except for both tax and MOT.

Hi - Thanks for the replies. I turns out that as it only turned 40 in July, I can not claim exemptions ( tax or MOT ) until adter April 1st next year.

If you don’t already know, just be aware that if your car doesn’t have a current MOT, most (all?) recovery companies such as the RAC won’t attend, even if you don’t need to have one legally .

Hope this helps some, Pete

Very useful to know ^ thanks

I've been thinking about that for mine when it gets to it and to be honest for 40 quid a year I'll probably just mot it anyway. It doesn't hurt to get a 2nd (experienced) set of eyes look over it every now and then you never know what safety critical thing you might miss

That is, assuming you can still put it in for an mot when it's exempt? Do they still give you a certificate and if you failed the cough test would anyone care

RAC: If the vehicle you break down in lacks valid tax, MOT, or insurance, we won’t attend your breakdown. However, this doesn’t apply if your vehicle is legally exempt from having an MOT or tax.

FLUX: The vehicle must have an MOT (unless exempt)

I called out the RAC last year (1st time I have ever called out recovery in all my 40 years of driving) when the bolts of my fan came loose and cut a hole in the radiator, the car is over 40 years old and doesn't have a MOT, it took them 14 hours to come out but there was no mention of the car needing a MOT.

My friend is an AA patrol and this definitely does not apply to the AA, they will fix classic cars 40+ without MOTs.

Although the historic vehicle is road tax and MOT exempt it must be roadworthy.

If the vehicle is presented for an MOT and fails then it is classed as no longer roadworthy and any faults must be rectified and then I presume the vehicle must be presented for an MOT again to declare it roadworthy.

If the vehicle is not presented for an MOT test as it is exempt and is stopped by the police or is involved in an accident or any other incident involving an insurance claim and is deemed not to be roadworthy the driver may be liable to proecution.

I put two exempt cars through each year, for peace of mind. I've had a couple of fails, but for things I can't check at home like headlight alignment. I take my cars to France every year and I can only imagine the hassle of explaining to a gendarme why they aren't covered by an MOT ticket.

It's not an alien concept to the French, "If you own a vehicle classed as a véhicule de collection, and it was registered prior to 1960, no test is required. A véhicule de collection at least 30 years old must have an MOT test every 5 years."
