Such a shame what they've done to landrovers with their stupid over complications and marketing as fashion accessories

they should be utilitarian go-everwhere simple to fix easy to maintain work horses. not cars for posers

you expect it with the Alfa though that's part of the fun apparently isn't it

I can certainly agree that Lexus are totally reliable after owning two ,the only thing wrong are the Lexus dealerships that will always try to rip you off whenever you're car goes into thier workshop's for any repairs!

Isn't lexus basically a Toyota with a posh badge stuck on it lol

If that's the case then I bet they're indestructible

What's the problem with JLR? Is it component quality? Whatever it is it seems systemic, been going on for years. Really sad.

parts being made by 3rd parties at the lowest possible price, focus on the bottom line cost all the time, same thing happened to Volvo when it got sold to Ford the build quality took a hit.  And in the case of landrover, defenders  being given fords weak tdi engines

that's the problem when one company owns lots of seperate brands though, there's all this internal politics between then, Volvo has to be less exclusive than Landrover which has to be less exclusive than Jaguar, which has to be less exclusive than Aston Martin (or whichever ones they own at the time)

and then you have premium cars sharing parts bins with more exclusive models like when the Jaguar XF came out and it was essentially a dressed up mondeo, loads of faults and people complaining about them expecting more from a top quality motor

I'm given to understand there are significant build quality issues and that maintenance is compromised by accessiblity.

For example:

Pulling a valve cover, needs a specific slide hammer for injector removal & clearance is tight, needs removal of supercharger as well, roughly a 9 hour job!

yes produced by Toyota as their super luxury range, and as you say pretty indestructible, the IS200 was one of the best cars I have ever owned  apart from my Minis of course.

surprised to see the BMW Mini in third place, I was always led to believe they were unreliable.

I think the early ones were but they ironed out the kinks fairly sharpish, possibly something to do with the timing chain?  I can't remember exactly

to be fair anything made by BMW is going to be pretty good as a car isn't it, totally aside from whether or not people like it stylistically or whatever

I have owned Binis/MINIS since they were launched, they have all been reliable, I currently have the Cooper S Countryman which has a good balance of power/economy

I have owned an early 2002 R50 Mk1 MINI since almost new and it has been very reliable despite really being a Rover designed car rather than a BMW. One well known weakness was the Rover gearbox fitted to the early models which needed regular oil changes and was not 'filled for life' as stated n the BMW Dealer service schedule!

The first MINI totally designed from the 'ground up' by BMW is the current Mk3 F56 MINI range which are the later MINI's covered in the What Car survey.

The R code numbers in MINI production are 'Rover' based designs (Mk1 & Mk2) and the F code numbers are the later BMW MINI designs. (Mk3).
