Spi 1994 Front Brakes Rubbing

Best Answer Buckles23 , 23 September 2023 - 02:49 PM
Hey GraemeC
Removed the pads again and pushed pistons out a little and gave them a light sand with 1200grit, which removed the small patches of dirt and rust. Then used a little brake fluid to lubricant the pistons. Pushed them in and out a couple of times and they seemed to work much better.
Gave it a quick test up and down drive way and seems to be good but will test them later tonight to confirm.
Will report back but early signs look good. 😊

Had an issue with front brakes rubbing and making the kinda noise u get if bearings are shot. Humming noise.
Anyway removing brake pads confirmed that noise disappeared and not the bearings.
The calliper pistons are not perfect but I’d say 80-90% still clean mental with the odd mark or rusty spot. They seemed to move in and out ok when fitting new brake pads.
After fitting the new pads went out for test drive and everything was good with no noise. It was left sitting for a few good hours and nipped out for my dinner and the noise is back and pads rubbing again.
Is there anything I should be checking or does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this. I’m guessing the pistons are just getting stuck but not sure if brake fluid or anything else might be worth a check.
Any help appreciated

Do you have the dust shields (HMP441032 - Mini Brake Disc Cover | Mini Brakes | minisport.com Mini Sport) fitted behind the disk? Are they catching or something caught in them?

Hey, No don’t have these fitted, it’s definitely the brake pads rubbing. When removed the wheel turned perfectly.

Remove the pads, gently get the pistons to come out a little and wipe little brake fluid around them before pushing them back and re-fitting the pads.

Right ok .. will give that a go. I just cleaned them up with usual anti grease stuff etc to get them clean.

Is the brake pedal fully returning with free movement in the operating rod?return spring ok?just thoughts,Steve..
Pedal seems ok and returning with a little wiggle eg “loose”. When you say operating rod is that the rod which comes up from pedal into engine bay. If so then this is loose and again will wiggle.
Thanks

Are the pad retainers rubbing on a disc?
The new ones are the wrong dimensions so need modification.

Also looks like the bearing on drivers side might be also causing some noise so that will be my next adventure lol
Thanks again

Hey, when I first fitted the retainers I did notice the fitting was not great and they seemed to want to bent inward towards the disks. I just adjusted them slightly so that gap between them and the disk. Will check again they have not moved but sure they are still ok.
When you say modified I take it you just shave off a little metal on the inside edges to make sure gap is ok?

Anything like that, I just used a bench disc sander to grind the corners into an angle so they couldn't touch the disc.
