One thing with 10" tyres (if I remember correctly) is that they are removed from the rear of the rim not the front because of where the dish/well is.

Homersimpson is correct. I had to point out to a tyre fitter that the tyre will only fit over the rim if the inner rim of tyre is in the well of the wheel.

I fear the truth is not all tyre fitters are trained properly and it made clear to them that the wheel is designed so that the tyre will slip on quite easily if the inner rim of the tyre is in the well.  In the case of 10" Mini wheels that means the wheel goes on the tyre fitting machine upside down.

I would never go to a tyre fitters where they usher you into a 'lounge' with free coffee. I like to see they know what they are doing. At 70 mph on a motorway your tyres are your only contact with the road.

I'm afraid when it says "tyres only to be fitted by specialist persons" or similar on the sidewall what that generally means is people whose knuckles scrape across the floor when they walk and their forehead keeps the rain off their shoes.

No doubt there are probably some great ones but most of them are chumps in my experience, I had a set of tyres fitted by one to some freshly powdercoated steel wheels (13" for an Austin Healery Sprite so not wide at all), the completely wrecked the rim edge on all of them and I went balastic at them.  The boss had them redone at the place that had just done them for me, aparently he remarked that he had "done a set of these very similar last week"!

Depends on the individual wheels as to which side you fit the tyres from. I think original 10" steels went on from the back of the wheel but my 6×10 minilites don't. I bolted the wheels to the car then fitted the tyres with the aid of tyre soap and plastic trim tools.
10" wheels won't fit on most modern wheel balancers either. I use a bubble balancer at home.

I'm not sure it is required for 10" wheels anyway but is the tyre soap the same as the white stuff that is painted on at tyre fitters, to help achieve an airtight seal between the rim and the tyre?

Tyre soap is the stuff you are thinking of. It is not actually to seal the bead but to lubricate the tyre to make it easier to install therefore reducing the risk of the tyre bead being damaged during installation. There are various names and colours of the stuff, tyre lube, tyre wax etc. There are a few different variations which are different styles but all do the same job.

So, gave GT Tyres a call and they said they will give it a go. Turned up there this morning and pop, another tyre broken!! James was very good, he went as slow as he could being so careful, but the tyre kept pinching and eventually broke. Couldn't even get the first side on. Went from the back and it just wouldn't go.

To be fair to James, he is going to replace the brand new tyre. He's the only one that's offered to do that.

Three tyres broken and I'm still no where closer to getting it put on the wheel. He doesn't know of anywhere that could possibly do it either.

Any ideas?

Same problem I had. First guy replaced the wheel and tyre. The other 2 replaced the tyre.
JBW fit them but you need to send them off, and not sure they will do it if you don't buy from them.
And if you get a puncture what happens. I think it's just on the 6s

Do you have a picture of the wheel so we can see where the well is in it?  It does sound odd that so many people are having issues with them as back when these cars were common I remember quite a few people running 10x6 wheels and I don't recall anyone having any issues with having them fitted apart from one guy where the tyre place tried to put them on from the front and wrecked a couple of tyres.

Personally I would have a go at doing it by hand using the damaged tyre (the undamaged side obviously and see where the issue is for myself.  Maybe the tyres you have are too stiff to go over the 6" wheels based on where the well is?

What make of 6 x 10 alloy rims have you got?

The tyres were almost impossible to fit to some of Midlands earlier 6x10 alloys because the recess was cast in the centre of the rim rather than offset to one side. The recess is there to make tyre installation and removal easier. When the bead ring of a tyre is fitted onto the wheel, it drops into the recess so the opposite tyre bead can be forced onto the rim without damage.

More details in TMF thread here:-

https://www.theminif...dish/?p=2005480

Quote:- "Are you thinking about getting them from midland wheel supplies? if so DONT DO IT! the ones from MWS are really dodgy, there is an inherrant design fault in them, i just got rid of a set. the problem is getting tyres onto them! it seems pretty much only MWS themselves can do it as they have some kind of magic/special tyre fitting machine that can do it? it is down to the position of the "well" in the middle of the wheel, and thats just the problem, its in the middle of the wheel, and not offset. i had 2 new yokos ruined when my tyre fitters tried to get them on, and i tried several other places too before looking it up on the net.
If you do a quick search on the net you will find plenty of people who have had the same trouble! i did see one guy, maybe off here, who brought a set off them directly, withtyres, and all was well until he tried to get 2 of the tyres replaced down the line, he had trouble with his usual guys, so went back to MWS and they fitted the 2 new ones, later the tyre bead gave out on the motorway and nearly totalled his car!
The tyre simply cannot stretch far enough to fit on the rim, and as such the bead end up ripping, and it seems if they do manage to get the tyre on after that, you end up with a lump in the tyre wall and eventually a blow out."

This is the wheel in question, but I have 3 others that have been fitted with the same Yoko A008 tyres. All tyres bought from Mini Sport.

I tried with the old broken one, and it was very very difficult so didn't even attempt to do the new one.

no wonder it's difficult to fit tyres on them

for comparison the position of the well on 4.5" S rims.

it's worth noting that the well is toward the front of the wheel, so in this case the tyres should be fitted from the front

How do they keep going when their wheels are so rubbish.

I wish there was a decent manufacturer of new alloys.

I think MWS moved the well over some time back on their later 6 x 10" alloy wheels after many customer complaints of impossible tyre fitting.....however as can be seen there are still sets of older rims being sold to unsuspecting Mini owners on the secondhand market when really they are only fit for the scrap metal recycling skip....

Unfortunately they are the old MWS alloys with the tyre fitting welll/recess in the centre making it impossible to fit a 10" tyre on their 6 x 10 rims.....later MWS castings were corrected with an offset recess. I am afraid as said they are only fit for the scrap metal skip....

This is what a good 6 x 10 alloy with correctly positioned offset tyre fitting recess/ well looks like....

I've never had a problem fitting tyres to these alloys (available from Minispares below) with offset recess (as long as the tyre fitters have tools to fit 10" tyres).
