Hello!

I'm in the process of restoring an 25th anniversary Mini (1984).

During the disassembly of the steering rack, I've stumbled upon a problem with removing the nut that holds the ball seat.
There are no sleeves cut into them, or holes for a C spanner.
I've tried to remove the nuts with a big pipe wrench but had no luck.

What is the best way to remove them?

Here are some pictures of the "nut":

Thanks!

KR

Normally you would have the rack bolted to the car which holds one end tight, I guess you'll have to have it mounted in a vice or something instead

For the removal you can get an inner track rod end removal tool, it's basically a U clamp with a 1/2" square hole for ratchet / bar to connect to

Have a look on amazon or ebay shouldn't be any more than 12-15 quid or so

That whole end is one piece which unthreads from the rack/"shaft". Buy a tool like this:

I mount the racks in a Pipe Vice when doing them on the bench (actually, I never do them on car) and I have a C Spanner for them;-

If you don't have a Pipe Vice, you can make a suitable set of jaws from a piece of timber, put a hole saw the dia of the rack body through it, then cut it in half through the hole, use these in an ordinary vice.

Thanks for the replies! I've tried making jaws with a wood piece but it keps spinning. I will have to buy the inner rack end tool, didn't know it existed! Thanks! KR Sander
