I don't normally post in projects, but I thought someone might like this one. I was generally getting hacked off with the little wheels you can easily buy, I suppose it's just my eye sight getting worse and the bent piece of tig wire scenario really. I started looking around for a bigger wheel which only seem to be available in the USA, some of which are really well priced until you ad the shipping on then the price gets silly. So I came up with this one, I downloaded the printed disc off the net, bought a 300mm alloy disc off the bay for £12.00 I think it was and raided the scrap bin.
I found a bit of hex bar which i turned down one end and threaded it UNC to screw into a water pump bolt hole drilled and tapped the other end to take the pointer doo daa which I cut and hand finished. I then turned a boss up to fit on the crank nose, drilled and tapped a couple of holes then bored a hole in the disc then two slots for movement, which I did by chain drilling and hand finishing again ( my milling machine is NFG at the moment).
The way you use it is quite decent really, you set the engine to approx TDC and bolt the boss on, fit the main disc and bolt that to the boss using the wing nuts do the old 10 thou before and 10 thou after bit using a DTI gauge as per normal find true TDC, do the calcs, undo the wing nuts, turn the disc to zero, do the nuts up and off you go.

Looks good, but are you still able to make adjustments to the vernier pulley without removing the timing disc as you're able to do with the usual smaller plastic discs?

There is enough room to get a hex key down the back, but as I normally use an offset key it doesn't really come into play, if I was going to put an engine on a dyno and swing the cam it would be fiddly but possible. Verniers normally come with degree marks on them anyway which sort of makes the disc redundant once you have the initial set up.
