"However, it is not only post-Euro 4 petrols (generally those registered after 2006) and Euro 6 diesel (typically registered after 2015) that evade the daily fee.
So do 'classic' cars.
ULEZ rules stipulate that any vehicle over 40 years is excused from the emission zone's charge, which amounts to a massive £62.50 a week if you're using your motor five out of seven days.
The ruling is in line with other motoring provisions, such as four-decade-old cars not requiring an annual MOT and automatically qualifying for 'historical vehicle tax exemption'."

Classic Cars magazine:-

Can I rely on the TFL ULEZ vehicle checker?
Answer: The FBHVC (Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs) warns that this is unreliable and may flag up exempt classics as being liable.

As a test we ran a 1962 Jaguar E-type through the online vehicle checker and it informed us that the car was liable for the charge.

Not to labour the point, but the ULEZ 'rules' stipulate that vehicles registered in the historic vehicle tax class are exempt.

This is clearly not the same as saying any vehicle over 40 years is exempt

Any government or orgnisation help page or "check you status / position" form, will always default to their preferred outcome. It's so you cannot automatically find the correct answer and they can divide and conquer.
My position would be to not pay and tell them to put up or shut up with regards to the burden of proof. Then argue the toss with them.
Fortunately, living in Aus I do not have to worry about it but feel for those who do.

I checked the compliance on the three cars that are in the family including a Classic Mini going onto a website for checking ULEZ compliance.

The Ford I was told to check, The Renault I was told did not comply and The Mini I knew would not comply as it is a 1988 car.

I cannot remember the name of that site but I then found the official TFL ULEZ compliance site and got the correct answers, both the Ford and Renault were compliant.

I was able to print off the confirmation for both vehicles as a record in case of any future problems.

Ok not to labour the point but........please explain the following:-

1982 Mini (2023 - 1982 = 41 years old) registered on the V5c registration document by DVLA in the 'Historic' tax class.....but when reg number is entered into the official TfL (Transport for London) ULEZ vehicle checker below it comes out as required to pay the ULEZ charge?

TfL check your vehicle:-

I know the online ULEZ vehicle checker is said to unreliable by some......but it would have been interesting to see how many people here on TMF with a 'Historic' tax class Mini get the ULEZ 'charged' result when entering their reg number into it.

Knowing from past experience what a faceless and difficult to make direct contact with anyone, type of big organisation TfL is, I would not want to drive past their ULEZ cameras thinking I was exempt from being charged £12.50 every day, without some confirmation that their computer system is using up to date DVLA vehicle data....

Probably playing devil's advocate here but do they charge the ulez fee if you charge an ev in their area of jurisdiction?

EVs are exempt

EV's are exempt at the moment but the cost of installing all the ULEZ cameras and infrastructure is just the first step toward 'smart' road user charging for ALL vehicles which is already being planned by Transport for London (TfL) as can be seen in the link here:- https://www.london.g...Evidence _0.pdf

TfL are clearly not going to switch off the ULEZ cameras when the remaining number of (they say 10%) higher emission cars disappear from the roads....and the income from the cameras falls.

I guess no one cares, as everyone is being sold on the big lie of EVs.

Some ferry companies may have views on EVs.For my lifetime cars have been an easy way of generating revenue, fines, convictions, call them what you like.Whoever is in charge will not alter this.If I had an exempt car and drove in London I would make sure it was correctly recorded. This will now spread countrywide.I am glad to be in my twilight years.Steve..
