Hi Folks ,

Just wondering  if someone on the Forum can help me with a technical problem please .

I have bought 2 new silver fillet strips from mini spares and also the cheap tool they use to put strips into rubber window seals on front and rear window .

I am having difficulty with the rubber seal on the windscreen  windscrreen  being very hard an not being able to put windscreen tool   in at an angle to get started !!!!!

Some friends have suggested silicon spray and or washing up liquid to soften up windscreen rubber to enable tool to go into gap and work all the way round .

Had no luck any advice please ????

kind regards stuart milliken

Really you should fit a new windscreen seal unless it isn't very old and you are just replacing the locking strip to not be yellow. I have seen plenty of people complain about the cheap tool, buy a good one.

Its going to be very difficult to put a new strip into a less forgiving old seal, even with the right tools.

I'd recommend using GT85 as a lubricant as it wont damage the rubber and may help soften it up a bit when installing the new strip.

Hi,

For the cost of a new windscreen rubber seal and the cost of some 3M 8509 bedding and glazing compound about £40 in total to me it is a no brainer to replace the seal. You will find that the cheap tool will work perfectly ok with a new seal, I replaced my seal recently using the same tool you have.

If using the 3M product or similar put in both the channel for the body work and the channel for the glass. It can be a bit messy but it is worth doing.

To add, I also bought that cheap tool and ended up making the spade shape a litter narrower in the vice, as it was too wide to fit in the rubber. Just make sure it remains wide enough for the fillet strip.
