Got some areas that I would like to treat and try to rescue is Bilt Hamber Deox Gel good to go with or is it true that Wallpaper paste and citric acid powder mix together does the same job?

Obviously would be sanding as much rust out as possible first :-)

Would you then treat the area with Hydrate 80 or not bother?

Next a zinc primer question, is bilt hamber electrox zinc primer the same stuff as say Wurth Zinc Primer?

Would you zinc prime over hydrate 80 if you use hydrate 80 or is zinc primer mainly for clean metal?

So many primers and rust converters etc lol...

Also would you use an acid etch primer?

I already have Bilt Hamber Epoxy Mastic :-)

Thanks

I’ve used Hydrate 80 on a few bits & pieces and it’s damn good stuff.

No need for the zinc primer beforehand as you can paint it directly on to the rust.

Obviously brush off the flaky rust first.

Will be using again soon on the front subframe.

Never used the Deox gel though.

Thanks, missed the Amazon cut off for Deox Gel so ordered Citric Acid powder, going by what people say it's the same stuff but in a Gel solution

I can confirm that Deox Gel is excellent stuff.

Used it many times on my mini very effective although you do need to follow the instructions closely.

You end up with bright pitted metal which I then covered over with Electrox Primer.

However if the rust is deep into the steel you may end up with something resembling lace.

I’ve just read on the Bilt Hamber website that zinc primer (Electrox) should not be applied over Hydrate 80 as it needs to be in contact with the bare steel.

I did a fair bit of research into rust converters.Hydrate 80 was the only 1 I could find that converts rust AND sticks to clean metal..... according to the manufacturers own data sheets.
That's what swung it for me.... obviously you won't paint clean metal in it,that would be pointless but if any gets on clean metal it's not going to flake off.
Plus once it's cured you can use conventional primers over it.
So hydrate 80 over coated with epoxy primer is my preferred method.....but I only use it on difficult to access areas that I can't reach with a sandblaster or aren't bad enough to cut out
