Hi guys,

I need help with the 2 issues below please. I just did not want to order the parts without making sure.

I have 1995 SPi;

My first problem is;
When I try the start the car I hear click from the starter motor but when I try again sometimes on 2nd try sometimes on 3rd try it starts just fine. It sometimes starts on first try. Battery and alternator are new.

My second problem is;
Every 10-15 rides fuel pump stop feeding the car and it stalls. When I wait 20-30 seconds and turn the key on ignition, fuel pump primes and car starts with no problem but 10-20 second later it stalls. If I leave the car overnight most of the times it's fine next day.

What could be wrong with it ? Do you think it is the relay pack failing or my starter motor and fuel pump failing seperately ?

Thank you in advance.

Check battery connections, especially the earth.

Check battery connections, especially the earth.

Battery and the connections are new. I replaced the earth cable to full metal one. Fuel pump issue is very rare and I am suspecting the relay box but as it is over £100 I just did not want to order.

The wiring may be new but are all the earth connections to clean, bare metal?

An intermittent connection will give the symptoms you describe.

Check, also, all the connections to the relay box.

At £100, it'd be worth getting the relay checked, by a competent auto-electrician, before replacing it.

I have opened the relay box 1 of the relays was a bit darker colour compare the others.

Are the relays all the same type?  If so, or if there's at least one of the same type as the fuel pump relay, try swapping them over to see of the fault goes away.  The starting problem sounds to me like a dodgy starter solenoid.

Try to connect between the starter main terminal and the wide spade terminal with some type of test lead (that will crank the engine over). That will eliminate the wiring and relay for the switching side, if a connection or component is in poor condition it often causes the issue you are having. I usually see this on vehicles without a relay to drive the solenoid but it could still be your issue if the relay or wiring is bad.

If doing what I just described doesn't work then the issue is in the solenoid, battery lead or earth cables (or the starter itself)

I was talking about the relays inside the engine management relay box. They are soldered on so cannot change them I'm afraid. I am guessing the fuel pump is going as the car not getting any fuel while driving and loss of power. For the starter motor I will try to open it and see if there is anything unusual inside it.

I will definetely be trying this and report back.

My bet is a defective ignition/starter switch. On my rally cars I have had ign switch issues and I fit a push-button starter switch with the Ign switch only activating the other circuits.
