Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a Rover Mini and am currently looking at a 1998 Cooper (Mk VII). The latest MOT had the following advisories:

Nearside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (5.3.6 (a) (i))

  • Nearside Front Upper Suspension arm ball joint has slight play (5.3.4 (a) (i))

Should these be of concern?

You need a Mini expert to look at the rear suspension mounting.
The ball joint is easy to rectify.
However, the main thing is to check for corrosion in all the other well-known Mini rust areas.
If you are unaware of where these are do not buy any Mini until you find an expert who will inspect it for you.

Sounds like I fair MOT. Should be easily sorted. I would be more wary of one that said clean bill of health.

If those were the only problems then you have a minter! The ball joints often have a bit of play and are cheap and fairly easy to replace. I would sort out the corrosion asap. It's not clear if they're talking about the body or the subframe.

I would say join your local mini club and make friends quickly...

They are a font of knowledge and if you get the right person they can fix or point you to the mini friendly grages in your area....
