I treat mine to the Esso supreme that has no ethanol but I don’t know if that’s available in Birmingham.

It has up to 5% Ethanol, so marketed as E5 https://www.esso.co.... to 5% ethanol.

E5 when I can still use an additive but if desparate, I've put E10 with an additive.

Having only just my car back to life I'm using E5 but I think E10 should be OK. I doubt it will do it any harm. Do you have an unleaded head?

At the moment it has no ethanol where I am but changes in September 2023 to 5% ethanol.

It isn't looking good. I currently detour to Tesco for their Momentum99 but after watching this review just (below) I'm wondering if it is worth bothering adding another 5 miles to my detour to get some Supreme, my guess is probably not.

There are good articles on this topic here: https://classicsworl...c-owners-guide/ and here: https://haynes.com/e...nd-your-vehicle

Your 1990 998cc can run on 95 E10 without problems, but there is two things to take into consideration:

  • Your fuel hoses need to support the ethanol component (older fuel hoses will deteriorate due to ethanol)
  • If you use your Mini not too often, E10 will degrade (ethanol absorbs more moisture and separate from the petrol it was mixed with)

Hope this helps making your choice.

I would say, try to avoid storing fuel in open containers these days. They degrade fast. In closed containers they will last much longer.

I use E5 with a bit of 'Valvemaster Plus'.

If you leave a vehicle parked with high-ethanol fuel in the tank, the little bit of moisture in the tank can mix with the ethanol and that allows 'bugs' to grow.

It is not such an isue with petrol engines, but is a big issue with diesel vehicles which are left sitting for longish periods (eg tractors, combine harvesters, etc).

Well that's disappointing.
