Fitting 10” Wheels On My Mini Convertible (Spi)

Hi There

I am considering fitting a set of 10” Force Racing ST10 Wheels on my Mini Convertible (SPI).
I see on the homepage that it states that these does not fit on Cooper S drive flanges.
As I am planning on fitting these on a Rover Mini SPI, I guess I will need to change to 7,5” brakes.

So my question is, do you know of a 7,5 brake kit that can use the SPI drive flanges, and do you know if the SPI drive flanges will work with the force racing wheels?

Could you please advise what I should do here?

You have a very nice, unusual Mini, which, because it is a convertible and not the classic Mini outline, doesn't look "wrong" because it hasn't got 10" wheels.

 

I'd keep it as it is.

 

It wouldn't be difficult to swap the hubs and fit 10" wheels, but there is a difference in the "Rolling Radius" of the tyres, which affects the Speedometer reading.

I would also leave as is but if not:-

You will need a 10" wheel with a deep offset to fill the large Convertible arches. You will also probably need to lower the ride height with a Hi-Lo suspension kit.

7.5" Disc brakes will be needed to fit inside the smaller wheels, Cooper S Disc conversion kits from Minispares are the usual choice.....not sure why Cooper S drive flanges are a problem with your chosen wheels, perhaps ask Force racing what they recommend to be sure?

 

There is not much difference between the outside diameter of a low profile 13" tyre and a higher profile 10" tyre so the speedo reading should not be too far out but easy to check with a sat nav or by following someone with another car who will tell you what speed their car is reading against yours.

These genuine deep dish 6 x 10" Minilites from Minispares have a deep offset:-

Offset ET-15, SPECIAL 70mm backspace for Japan market originally.
This gives 4.25" outer wheel edge from hub face.

Ok. You will need new calipers. Drive flanges.discs and maybe new brake pipes as they tend to fail when you remove them from the flex hoses which you will need to do to align the hoses correctly in the new calipers.

 

so quite a bit to do. 
 

I would not as it looks great as is.

You can’t.  Like I said to run 10s you need the 7.5” disc set up. So drive flanges, Discs and calipers. Your 8.4” discs, drive flanges and calipers are not usable.

No. They are totally different. And you will HAVE to change the calipers.

Yeah Think i Will go with this. Probably the 7.75” kit from KAD.

Yeah Think i Will go with this. Probably the 7.75” kit from KAD.

 

So you can change the calipers but not the drive flanges? 
 

fitting the KAD. kit is more likely to raise questions as look quite different and don’t have any approval papers. 
 

But retro fitting a complete kit from an earlier Mini is not permitted as the way the disc attaches is different meaning the drive flange is different! 
 

I would be having a chat with my local tester to check out the options.

As suggested above, talking to the testers would be helpful.  Are you required to stick with the setup as built?  in which case 8.4" discs and the standard calipers are mandatory. Or are you allowed to change to a different setup as long as it was fitted to a mini in its entirety at some point? in which case the 7.5" disc and cooper s calipers should be possible.

No issue here is that i am not allowed to run 4 pot calipers, without some kind of approval (EXPENSIVE) Don't think they care/can see different drive flanges. Only thing was just that the Force racing wheels state that they do not fit with the Cooper S flanges

..speak to Force Racing and ask them what hub/flange/brake setup they suggest.  they should know

First of all: It is Your Mini, do what ever You want and decide for Yourself if the technical and financial difficulties mentioned from the others are worth it!

 

But in my opinion You should also consider to You decision the look and if want to deal with the criticism of "Mini-Experts".

 

In my eyes 10 inch wheels under 12/13 inch arches (and vice versa 12/13 inch wheels under 10 inch arches) somehow don't look right. Technically the 10 inch wheels are only 4-6 % smaller and and the speedo would read a bit more but not enough to care really at the exact Mini speedos ;D

So my advice is to a) try to borrow that wheel or maybe a 4 spoke revo to put under Your arches to check if the look is what You imagined and or b) search the internet for a similar setup, like Your preferred wheels under sport pack arches. 

Even the sport pack are still a bit wider - I think - the aesthetics work similar, so what looks good on sport packs, in my eyes also looks good on the cabriolet.

 

On my Cabriolet I removed the body kit, installed chrome bumpers, special arches and 10 inch revos. Especially in Germany at every Mini meet I got comments about "How could You have ruined such a special and rare Mini." Sadly more often than not, that are also the first comments I typically got. It's tiring...

On L2B last Year sadly I also got my first such comments in the UK.

To be clear, I don't moan about the people, who I had a nice conversation with and told me, that what I have done to my Mini don't fit their taste. That's perfectly fine, because if we all would have the same taste, we all would drive red Golfs...

I talk about the guys that only came over to tell me, I am an idiot that ruined my car...
