93 mini 998 carb with, as far as I know, standard steady bar brackets.
Bushes are standard rubber from mini spares and have been in a couple of years with the sleeves fitted

They are probably just worn/defective. Most don't seem to last long at all.

The rubber used today is not as good as the stuff used in 70s/80s. Probably why people resort to poly bushes.

Play vs movement, good point. I guess most of the movement is the rubber as it compresses when the bar moves, but even though the bolt in the engine block is tight the bush still seems a bit loose?
Are there meant to be any washers on the engine block side?

There should be a large penny washer fitted between the block and the bush. Penny washer diameter should be the same as the largest diameter of the bush.

I thought that I had seen reference to a washer somewhere but I can't find anything on any of the parts manuals online, was it standard? It might take out some of the play

Pre 1970 cars had a tear drop shaped washer, item 91. 1970 onwards cars have a large penny washer, item 110.

I bought some Nos rover bushes they are totally different from the ones available from retailers now, not as hard, a lot more rubbery. Been on the car for a year now with a decrease in vibration.

the polyurethane bushes that DSN retrosport use with their steadies seem ok; firm but pliable like the rubber ones and holding up well on my car after a couple of years use

i suspect what a lot of what is marketed out there as 'poly' bushes are made of polypropylene

All my others have the solenoid bracket there instead.

The item description on the Someford site also includes  "if fitted"  so some may not need it. Having just checked my 1275 engine I notice the rear coreplug recess on the end of the engine may be encroaching on the bush bearing area, so that's a job I'll need to do.  Since the core plugs aren't the same on a smaller engine it may not be necessary on those.

My car is originally a 72 mini 1000, I've owned it since 1984. It had the large penny washer in 1984 when it still had it's original 998 engine. As you've mentioned, on a 1275 block the bush will deform into the core plug recess without the washer fitted.

I also have a 1098 engine but the car is stored nearby and I'll wait for better weather to check it.

Resurrecting this thread rather than start a new one -  how much play is there meant to be in the top engine steady bush after it is tightened up? I've had a new rubber bush in for a couple of years and noticed now when I rock the engine it moves a little within the bush. Is this normal or should it be solid?

2 yrs regular use seems to be about it for standard rubber bushes would always suggest upgrade to poly for these. regarding earlier post for rosejoint arms wondering how bulkhead bracket copes with these?

So the washer was fitted on the outside of the engine bush so have moved it to the other side but doesn't make much difference. New poly bushes on order.
