After much work and many bleeding knuckles it's time to unsorn my '79 Mini, get some insurance, and hit the road. The government website doesn't like the 11-digit number on my V5, or something, anyway it complains. Being as it's from about 1990 it's probably not stored in their confuser. Do I have to apply for a new V5C at a cost of £25 or something? What's the recommended procedure?

I've got a mini that's not been taxed for 30+ years the advice l had with a change of address logbook is to tax it at the post office paying the full duty and then claim it back from the DVLA and in future you will be tax free. I think it is to get the vehicle details back on their system
Hope that helps

You need the new Red V5C (if it is not already) which was sent out a few years ago to update & replace the old blue copies of the V5.

Once you have a current red V5C you can go to a main post office (not all do car tax) and apply for changing to 'Historic Tax' class so your Mini will then be exempt from tax, also you will need to declare that it is over 40 years old so no MOT is required with a form V112. The post office scan the barcode on the V5C and stamp forms to send off to DVLA for you....there does not seem to be a way of doing this online yet.

MOT exemption form required can be downloaded here:-

Declaration of exemption from MOT (V112) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Historic (classic) vehicles: MOT and vehicle tax:-

Thanks, I just called DVLA (after trying to get a new V5C online which crashed their computer). And yes I need to do all that, exactly as you say, at the post office, and give them £25. He also mentioned that on the V5c I should be sure to put the taxation class down as "historic" rather than "PLG" (private light goods).

I'm surprised you have to pay given you have an old V5. I even got a new V5C for a damaged car for no cost, I bought years ago that at the time (10 years ago) would have once required a VIC.

I think there was a cut-off date a few years ago for the free update of the old blue V5 to the new red V5C. I seem to remember he new V5C was issued because a large batch of blank V5 documents were stolen and were causing problems with forged documents circulating....
