For many many years, I just used a short length of 3/8" (10 mm) Chain, bolted the end link under the middle head stud and away you go. It tilts the engine at the right angle. To get away from having to re-torque that nut, later I made 2 adaptors from old spark plugs that screw in to Nos. 1 and 4 on the Head with that same short length of chain between these.

I'm not saying this is the correct method but not having anything else to hand I used 3 strong ratchet straps.

one at each end, all the way round, under and back up, both attached at the top to the crane arm

and one around the block horizontally just under the head nice and tight just to make sure the others didn't move

it worked fine but I was careful and slow checking it all the way for any signs of movement

if it was a bigger engine I probably would have been more wary

since then we bought anchors that bolt to the head as per imack post, that'll be for when we put it back in, I have to be honest though I did wonder at the time whether it made sense to put strain on those head studs?  but if thats the usual method I'm sure it's fine

The one time I took the engine out I tied ropes around it. Seemed like a safe way to spread the load.

I remember three of us lifting one out without a crane .. we'd driven to collect a 2nd hand engine and box and the seller failed to mention it was still in the shell!!

Yes I lifted mine with four people, two on each side of a scaffolding pole borrowed from a nearby building site, while I kind of steadied it to make sure it didn't hit anything too much on the way out.
