Long story short, engine starts and runs fine but ONLY with the clutch pedal fully depressed/in. Bringing the clutch out to apply a gear, it stalls the engine. It will not start with the clutch pedal out/untouched.

Car is definitely in neutral, as it does not lurch forward when trying to start.

What I know:
- starter. Strong and gives a solid clunk when trying to start (plus it starts the car with the clutch in fine)
- battery. Great crank voltage tested
- removed wok and release bearing to remove these from the potential issue list. Car will not start with wok off.

Before I rip the engine and box out, does anyone have any suggestions? I've had a look online and can't find any information on this issue.

Sounds like you have some long bolts catching the flywheel?

Where about? Surely engaging the clutch wouldn't magically shorten bolts?

No but it moves the flywheel away from quite a few.

is it making bad noises as you lift the clutch pedal as it stops?

bolts that can cause problems. Engine mount. Clutch slave (bracket) the old starter solenoid mount.

No bad noises. Here's a video of the engine cutting out as I release the clutch.

All bolts you mention are all as they have been since I've owned the car and previously ran ok.

What is the car/engine?  Carb, SPI or MPi?
Has anything been done to the engine recently or has this just started happening out of the blue?

1275cc Carb. Engine came out to fix an oil leak on the diff housing.

very odd - it's like the primary gear wont turn

take the plugs out, put it in 4th gear and push it.  does it roll ?

When you say it won't start with the clutch out, what does it do?  Does it turn over and not fire or does it do nothing at all?

I was thinking seized primary too, but that wouldn't cause a perceivable issue in neutral (if it is actually in neutral)

seized primary usually behaves like you can't disengage the clutch.

in this case the clutch appears to be working, but as it's released and starts clamping the clutch plate the engine stalls, suggesting the clutch plate itself cannot rotate for some reason

the primary is free on the crank tail as the engine runs with the clutch in, so i think the issue must be downstream somewhere

Two gears selected?
You've had the diff housing off, I presume it's a rod change box. Never worked on rod change myself but I'm guessing you have to mess with the selector mechanism when removing the diff case.

Put it in first gear and let the clutch up..does it set off? If not and just stalls you may have it locked in two gears.
This is quite possible after having the diff casing off and the selector rod/detent spring and plunger is messed up.
