I have an annoying rattle in the drivers side seat belt tensioner - retractor unit which is located behind the drivers seat down in the rear parcel compartment next to the back seat. It's totally encapsulated in a plastic housing - has anyone found a simple fix with this type of problem?

Rattles are annoying, but part of the mini experience it seems! :)

I’d start the diagnosis with seeing if there is anything obvious that is loose (the cover itself, the bolts that hold it to the car?) failing that, unbolt and inspect. You may need to open it up and try to diagnose further. If you do this, take lots of pictures as a ref. You may find that it’s simply a bolt or screw that needs tightening, and hopefully externally :)

Always thoroughly test safety critical parts if you’ve dismantled and put back together again! If in doubt get another.

Good luck

Thanks - I checked the drivers side pillar loop where the belt does and found that this was sloppy and noisy as the wave washer spring that the bolt goes through had lost its tension. I bent the washer a little bit for more tension and this seems to have made a difference. Will take it for a test drive during the week.

Word of warning, On one of the housing side covers for the seat belt it should have DO NOT REMOVE on one of the side covers.

It means exactly what it means - DO NOT REMOVE,  you will have springs and gumming's everywhere and you wont get it back together.

I had an old broken cased one many years back, and I wanted to see all the internals being a typical 18 year old lad,

It was the last piece I removed, what a mess it left !!!! Spring and parts everywhere !!!
