Hi anyone had any dealings with the Blackbox 2 system? I have built a 998 turbo and it's all up and running. I want a mappable ignition and have been looking at the Aldon amethyst system but the Blackbox 2 appeals because it does not require a laptop to set up or adjust as it can all be done on the unit itself.
I currently run a standard dizzy with the centrifugal advance locked but I have retained the vacuum advance as the car will be a daily and helps with the mpg. I was going to get a dizzy curved to the car but I like the sound of a mappable unit I can adjust. I have looked online for reviews but can only find the original Blackbox unit which is similar to the Aldon which needs a computer to setup.
I just want to know if the unit is actually any good and if I use the vacuum advance on the unit will it be confused when the car comes on boost? The car is a daily running low boost, not a fire breathing monster, I just want something that will be reliable.
Cheers all

The instructions are pretty gauge about what the optional vacuum system does, and if it does boost or just vacuum. Ideally you’d get the unit to apply a correction and not use the vacuum advance port on the distributor

I’d honestly just get one that uses a laptop or Bluetooth app so that you can manage boost retard vs load and rpm

I’ve got a CB performance blackbox to install on my car, it has a MAP sensor and can vary the timing against load and rpm, which is really what you need for a boosted engine. I’m currently using the old Accuspark unit, which works ok but only has rpm vs advance and has no MAP sensor for load based tuning

I have been browsing different systems, I know what your saying about tuning under load and it has been in the back of my mind. I just like the idea of a plug and play system, from what I have read the Aldon system only works with windows 10 or earlier which is annoying. I'll have to look up the CB performance system, it would be interesting to see how the map unit mounts up, I just like the seeming simplicity of the dizzy units.

The CB unit is very similar to the others. The distributor has the advance weights locked, and the blackbox intercepts the wire from the distributor to coil.

You can put the unit itself anywhere in the car, it just needs power & ground plus the wire from the distributor and wire to the coil.

I doubt there would be any plug and play systems that would have a pre installed map suitable for a turbo 998.

I don't know anything about the blackbox but look at the 123+ dizzy. It's fully programmable, built in map sensor and connects to your phone via Bluetooth so no need for a computer. I have one which I used for a year with no problems at all, I'm only changing now to get more space in front of the engine to fit a intercooler.
