What everyone at the same time or the millions spent improving the grid and infrastructure?
Within 5 years there will be a huge development in battery types, solar power recharge and cars which can put charge back into your home which is currently being used.

No there will not. Perhaps you should read up on free energy.

I work in the industry.... Wow it proves so many people are dinosaurs and can't move on with change lol

Then you should know better. Wow it proves so many people are sucked in by polispeak and commercial hype!!

Cynical man here.Upgrade your infrastructure Mr power supplier.
Give me some taxpayers money to do it and I might.
Ok here is a potfull. What happened to your huge profits by the way?
Oh they went to share holders.
How long will it take?
Five years to pick contractors who will undoutably encounter unforseen problems and massive cash overspends.
And so it goes on,false promises delivered by those lied to,grift, lack of cohesive planning, profits and shareholders first etc etc.
I once believed in utopia.
Sorry to be negative.
I once was very positive if you can believe that.
Sad Steve..

I work for an electrical contractors and we've installed a grand total so far of one electrical car charger. We have a contract with a sizeable local council but they haven't said one word about them to us, the one we fitted was a private job for another company

I don't think it's even on the cards for them, they're far more interested in spending money on 'school roads' and parking payment systems, cameras and yellow boxes everywhere, anything they can make money out of. Not things that cost them money and gain no return

And this is a London Borough where almost no one has on-drive parking to take care of their own needs. I can't see them EVER making the change let alone talking about 5,10,15 years. Unless there's a big sudden change in their attitudes and policies

The neighbouring Borough I actually live in have put a few here and there despite it being less crowded with cars, more people having driveways etc, but even then it feels like a token effort. Great, you put in 3 chargers down one road and a few miles away on another road there's another 3 . Little more than virtue signaling really

Supermarkets could step up a bit couldn't they, having a whole row of 3 phase charging stations for when you're doing the shopping for an hour would definitely be a useful bit of charge like putting 20 quid or so in the tank

We shouldn't have to rely on private enterprises but I'm guessing that's the way it's going to end up because the government are just too slow to provide and when they do local councils have 'better ideas' for spending

Like those stupid traffic calming schemes that go in then come out again 5 years later

I will stand by my statement of a shift in development over the next 5 years. Quite a few London boroughs are having a few thousand charging points fitted this year so getting there(other areas following suit)If you download zap map you can see the amount of charging points and it also shows you recent news. Every one has an opinion and mine is open to change...I believe we all need to be more savy at home regarding electricity 😁

5 years does seem optimistic, but I would be surprised if we haven't started down that route.

We already have EVs that are capable of V2L, or bidirectional charging, we also have domestic solar power.

Though, we also have a government that subsidised huge profits for energy suppliers via grants & benefits paid to consumers

Granted if you can charge at home and you've put effort into solar or other energy recovery, and keeping your usage down then 100% EV is for you and I'm sure it's the way forward

Its just the infrastructure argument that's all, being good for the minority is nice but to make an actual change to the environment you have to make it work for the masses

In terms of cheap clean power production for those purposes I'm firmly in the nuclear camp, more of that needs to be funded for sure

I see it as an ideological issue. Democratising energy production, so more is done closer to where it is consumed, would help with the infrastructure challenges. We've been going in the opposite direction, with corporate capitalism, for half a century.

It's mind boggling for an island that did turnpikes, coal, canals, railways, town gas, electricity, natural gas... that we haven't settled on a model that works for us.

"Statistics released by the Department for Transport showed that between October 1, 2022, and January 1, 2023, just 26 public electric carcharging points were installed on average each day. However, in order for the 300,000 figure to be met by 2030, this number needs to quadruple to 100 per day.

ie. In order to meet the 300,000 target, monthly installations for new EV charging devices will need to increase from 806 to 3,130 – a 288 percent improvement."

Also playing a form of devil’s advocate.
With socialised healthcare it’s in the government’s interest to reduce pollution in towns/cities. The cost of a few chargers is likely to be significantly less than treating life long respiratory illnesses.

"A Tesla that had run out of power blocked a Wiltshire road for nine hours as it was unable to be removed. The incident happened at Lyndhurst Road junction on the A36 at 2pm yesterday, with the electric vehicle unable to be removed from the road until 9.30pm. A number of local workmen along with the policeman attempted to push the car to safety, however despite their best efforts they could not move it. The obstruction caused delays throughout the rest of the day...."

Very strange story because Tesla would have arrived to move the vehicle quite promptly if the request had been made ….

Tesla Instructions for Transporters  (see link below)

DO NOT TRANSPORT WITH WHEELS ON THE GROUND:-

https://www.tesla.co...B3F491B8C0.html

You are not allowed to “ flat tow” a Tesla in case of damage or fire.
It also seems if its completely dead (no charge) you have to have it lifted onto a transporter as you cant access the touch screen to select “ transport mode” which disengages the brakes....?

No wonder the Police, etc have not got a clue what to do with a stranded EV, they probably spent most of the day trying to understand the Tesla instruction manual for fear of being liable for causing expensive damage to the car.

eg. CAUTION
Because the windows automatically lower slightly when you open or close a door, always connect to an external, low voltage power supply before opening a door if the vehicle has no power to avoid breaking a window.
