And some older TMF members may also remember the British Motorcycle industry at its postwar peak in the 1950s and '60s....[/quote]

What happened to the M/C industry pretty much summed up the endemic problem of British manufacturing, the same old " you have what we have not what you want" scenario. This always reminds me of a conversation I had years ago with a RHP worker. A British company had designed a new electric motor for a certain use, they needed a specific bearing, they went to RHP, asked if they could make one, RHP said no, but we have this one which is slightly the wrong dimensions but will do the job, just go away and re-design your motor so it fits. Said company went to NSK and asked the same question, NSK said no we don't but how many do you need we'll make them for you. RHP no longer exists in Chelmsford nor does Marconi except in the local museum, 5000 men and women now stand around B&Q and the such telling people where the light bulb isle is.

But sadly not for much longer at B&Q rival Homebase.....

Homebase enters administration with 2,000 jobs at risk:-

"In the last quarter, Tesla had an excess of 46,561 vehicles that were sitting unsold in inventory. That’s about 10.7% of its total production. By contrast, the company had an excess of approximately 2% for 2023 in its entirety".................

"Nissan had the highest EV inventory in February, with almost 160 days' supply, followed by BMW and Kia. The lowest was GMC, with 54.6 days' supply of new EVs at dealers."

There's a real danger that we get hung up on the electrification thing and miss what's really happening ... competition from Chinese imports across all drivetrains wiping out UK/European car manufacturing. If we don't think it can happen refer back to the British motorcycle industry. VW are already creaking.

There's an over-supply of cars worldwide, the Chinese offerings are decent and cheap and the Chinese are making product that our governments want them to make, a perfect storm.

Politicians trying to force the issue with fines is what is killing manufacturers profits and jobs in the UK and Europe, rather than allowing car buyers to decide at what point they feel comfortable that the technology and infrastructure is in place for switching to an EV.....and that 'early adopters' don't get landed with a rapidly depreciating vehicle with obsolete tech and limited battery range.

Sorry I should have explained a bit more, Audi, VW, SEAT, mainly EV but some proper cars, but the wierdo models, the sort when you walk in the showroom you say to yourself " who would buy that POS" Well evidently not many people. Things may have changed as I haven't been to a car meet there for a couple of months.

You wouldn't get me in an electric car ever, the the trauma would be to much for me worrying about finding a charge point adding 2-3 Hours to a long journey seeing such a lot of depreciation so much so that by the time the car is paid for it will be worthless , EVs are the biggest con ever, you are not saving the Planet in any way if that was ever a argument, they are NOT the future and never will be , How come the people who are forcing you into these milk floats don't drive them  ?

The electric cars are not Planet friendly at all and if you believe they are you need treatment , immediately  !!!!

If you think i' m going to top myself to save the planet your very much mistaken !!!
