No water coming from windscreen washers, took the non return valve next to the pump out of the line and the washer jets cleared the roof.   Tried two new replacement non return valves and again, no washer fluid flow.  For absolute anti-numpty certainty, I checked with the valves fitted round the opposite way, no flow.

I tried sucking through the non return valves in the direction of flow and can't suck any air through.  Assuming that a non return valve should offer little resistance to flow in the correct direction, does this suggest that an issue with the non return valve manufacture...  or is my pump dying, despite the fact that without the valve my car looks like a fire fighting vessel welcoming a new cruise ship into harbour.

Thanks, Dave S

Depends where you split the system to,test it... have you checked to see if then jets on then scuttle panel are blocked or not?

Disconnect the pipe to the jets, does water come from the pump outlet? Could the pump have been damaged by frost? Try forcing water through the pump with a syringe, sometime they can cavitate with a small air lock.

I have removed the jets and left them in boiling water over night and been amazed at the stuff that comes out of the jets.. or stick a pin into the jets as if you are going to move the spray angle.

If it works fine without the non return valve, then you could run it like that it just might mean you wait a little longer the the initial spray of water to hit the screen. Sounds like you would need to adjust the jets with it removed. though. I don't run one and it works ok,

I’ve ever seen a non return valve for washers. Are they something that’s still available?

Thank you ever so much for all these suggestions.

item 5, though the original part and the replacement both look different to the drawing:  http://www.minispare...h.aspx?2~20~196

that's the way I left it (though i haven't adjusted the jet angle yet)

disconnected the pipe from the pump, got a nice pool of water in the boot.  I can't be sure that the pump is fine as it seems to have insufficient power to force water through the non return valve, yet when I take the valve out of the line the jet of water cleared the car and left water on the rear window.

softening the rubber tubes in a cup of boiling water helped a lot with the tight connections

If the valve is in-line is it the right way round?

So sounds like the screen wash is in the boot.

Try removing the pipe and blowing down the pipe see if you can hear anything at the jets. The tube going over the door is prone to either blocking or splitting. Any signs or smells along the roof?

Also might be worth testing the motor on the bottle on a bench.

witn water clearing roof sounds like pipe etc. all ok. maybe faulty manufacture of valves try a different but reputable supplier for one and if still the same then try new pump. can run without without damaging pump but does take a long time to pump from boot

I tested with the valve fitted both ways round

Could be.  I tried with two replacement valves from Mini Spares.  I couldn't suck air through any of the valves (yes, I tried in both directions too) which surprises me.

Now the wipers have died! Pretty clear this is wiper motor
