Hi all

Needing some help with re-wiring the alternator to the Starter/solenoid. Had issues before when I first bought the mini and with a bit of learning have found out the degraded brittle wire I partly removed which might have been the fuse wire which is labelled 32 (Red) on the below diagram.

I believe I have a fault in the wiring here and causing intermittent problems with the running of the car and want to know what I need for this job.

3 pin connector to alternator is fine and new. It has one small wire which I believe goes to battery light on dash which is ok.

The 2 thick wires Are ok and run down into a wire wrapped area and join together into the fuse wire which then goes to starter. It’s this part I’m not sure what to replace it with. Currently I only have about an inch of the fuse wire left as it just broke off and crumbled the last time I checked it and therefore just removed the old stuff and connected back up with what was left of the wire.

What amp rated wire will I require (think I have some 17amp Halfords wire but think it’s not enough) and what can i use as a fuse wire as they are hard to find and even not sure what amp I need ???

Have read I could use a yellow 80a fuse instead of fuse wire.

Has anyone got some info on what I need to do to replace this safely. Not great at knowing what type of wires in need

Thanks

When I fitted an alternator to my 67 mk1 I just wired it straight to the battery cable on the starter solenoid. It's a very short run of cable and not likely to rub though and short out on anything.
2 x 17 amp cable is not enough for anything but the lowest output lucas alternators. 28 x 0.3mm strand thin wall cable is rated at 25 amp so 2 of those would cover it.
My mini manual is too old to include alternators but I looked it up in my metro manual and the first metro's didn't have a fusible link.

Both the big wires are linked inside the alternator anyway. It's a throwback to dynamos when one would have supplied the headlights. Having a "spare" is still useful & it allows thinner cable to share the load.

They are really connected to the battery, it's just battery cable is also handy for for powering the starter. The fusible links (big fuses) are a relatively new addition, so it will work fine without them. If you want that little extra bit of peace of mind, you could replace them with any type.

It's shorting the battery they're actually guarding against, so should be rated to the wire going from the battery (i.e. starter) terminal to wherever.

Hey thanks for getting back to me..

I have bought a 80amp fuse link with holder anyway so might as well use it in the wiring.

So what I am hearing from u guys is I just need bog standard battery cable.

So essentially I would have original 2x brown wires coming from alternator and linked to the fuse link 80amp then from the other side of that I would have battery cable connected to the starter.

Or

Forget the fuse and just re-wire with battery cable.

Am I reading this right
